Look, if other countries want to play like Canada they just need to consistently produce half of the best players in the world all the time for like 50 years, and then have the second best hockey country expel themselves by cheating. Is that so much to ask?

Like, IMO the bigger issue is that like 40% of your country has intentionally given itself a personality disorder to cope with living in a society where life outcomes get allocated in a manner where some people have private jets and others have go-fund-me's to keep from dying of basic stuff.

Have you considered that we tried this, and the most basic element of non-toxic children's sports (the participation trophy) has already become a totemic feature of right wing backlash that gets brought up by every freak from comedy to politics as the "downfall of the West"?

Chat, is there a word for bad growth and high inflation?

Man, I don't think about you at all, certainly not enough to cruise your profile for sweet dunks like that one.

Man, you seem very tough and extremely cool.

Why does 95% of liberal messaging read like it's being written by the most annoying gunner in your poli sci classroom?

Same reason!

Something people don't talk about much in politics is that the day-to-day stuff (especially coms) often gets filtered through the interests and social mores of the mid 20's go-getter types who end up being staffers. What happens when your 20-somethings are all nazis?

This kind of cosplay happens.

I mean, I think throwing stones and hiding hands isn't exactly the bravest choice, either.

Not to be pedantic (and I agree with the sentiment), but that's fairly obviously not the part of that post that violates the guidelines.

I'm paraphrasing Susskind here, but the things you measure sometimes become the things you chase.

Joy is complicated, subjective and fleeting. Money is quantifiable, trackable, and (on the low end) tracks with joy. What we're seeing is the result of chasing the metric instead of the goal.

Something worth considering is that intelligence, goodness and human worth are not the same thing.

Many good folks are dumb, many smart folks are bad. All people have worth.

Brains are a matter of luck, and if you allow them to stand in for goodness in your mind, you risk your own moral standing.

I think China is an interesting natural experiment here, because the financial interests are different.

Chinese AI models seem focused on doing normal chatbot stuff, but cheaper.

To me that indicates the "building god" thesis may be downstream of the finance side, and not interaction with the tech

I would say that the tanky pile-ons are a bit more aggressive over here.

It's possibly different for big accounts, but my experience was that my X feed was like 20% Naziism at the end, and that I would maybe have one productive conversation in 10.

Here, I see almost no Nazi content, and I'd say 4/10 conversations are productive, although they skew a chunk more liberal.

This is the dividing line on the "does money buy happiness" question. The first kind of rich (buying luxury items) won't make you much happier, but the second kind (not worrying about basic things) 100% will. Very relevant economic distinction!

I can't speak to the internal thoughts of the people involved.

Maybe some believe as you say, but if so, their actions don't reflect that. They'd be shockingly, nigh-criminally reckless.

Certainly, it's great marketing copy to claim the belief either way.

18.02.2026 20:18 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The actions of all the people involved make sense if you assume that the people involved believe that the tech is actually something between a pretty valuable tool you can sell to businesses and a way to displace a substantial degree of existing moderate skilled labour. THAT you sell shares in.

If they were really building god, they'd be doing it with a blank check from the federal government, who would be reacting to the possibility by building a future where the nation owns god.

Why worry about some dudes on Sand Hill Road at all?

Why would those dudes fund their own obsolescence?

18.02.2026 19:11 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Oh totally. It's a double edged sword. On the one hand, high variance favours the less talented team, on the other hand open ice favours the team with 3 of the top 4 point scorers in the NHL.

18.02.2026 18:30 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Hindsight bias here, but holy crap, I'm not sure how anybody plays against Canada in a 3 on 3. The forwards look unreal with that amount of space.

18.02.2026 18:21 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

If you honestly believe you are creating God, you do not worry for a single instant about how shareholders might feel about the whole thing.

The finances would be beyond immaterial!

You would be impossibly rich, but also the concept of riches would be meaningless!

Unless they're lying.

18.02.2026 16:23 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

IMO, the revealed beliefs of these people put the lie to any claim that they believe the superintelligence stuff.

Because, yes, these WOULD be obvious questions, and they are flagrantly not worried about them.

They are acting like they really want a short term stock boost and to exit via IPO.

I kinda disagree! I have a very close friend who is an avowed libertarian and broadly has politics that resemble a utopian anarchist. He really thinks that people will take care of each other if you get out of their way. I think he's wrong, but not immature.

I get why you feel that way, though!

I worry, particularly in my field of law, that the use of these tools is going to make people (especially the ones available to poor folks) less and less able to do any of the three valuable kinds of writing, all of which get developed by grinding and banging one's head against metaphorical walls.

18.02.2026 15:24 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

This echoes a lot of thoughts I've had on this. I think people value three kinds of writing:

1) Artistically beautiful
2) Imaginatively novel
3) Technically immaculate

GenAI can't do any of these.

It can do "bullshit" communicative writing (absent the above three), and that is still valuable!

18.02.2026 15:23 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Totally.

Libertarianism is a strange ideology, in that it has an extremely wide range of hierarchy vs. egalitarian views. But absolutely some of them do believe in capitalism as a human value discovery mechanism, and that maps cleanly onto conservatism and fascism.

IMO, this is all plainly downstream of two basic truths:

i) conservatism believes in entrenching hierarchies,
ii) this is a loser in a democracy, where most voters are on the bottom.

All the racism/religion/guns is an attempt to square that circle. Monarchy just throws the circle out.
