B&M (and Wilkinson's before it) are such money traps for us. We rarely get out of one without spending at least Β£30.

Any good games on sale this time?

Resident Evil REmake's HD port, in which Jill Valentine leisurely trots to a door only to find it locked. That's okay, the angry zombie behind you will patiently wait. The undead are very understanding when we forget our keys.

Jill, I was under the impression that your skillset would have allowed us to avoid this specific scenario

PlayStation 1 Barry had explicitly assured me I needn't worry about this happening

The Video Game History Expansion Pack – Pitch your story Today I’m putting my money where my mouth is and launching a new project β€” a book focused on game history outside of the usual North American perspectives.

So, today I'm announcing a new book project... and doing a call for papers: crpgbook.wordpress.com/2025/10/31/t...

It's an anthology of video game history outside the usual US perspective - an accessible & exciting panorama of different realities - and I'll pay 300 USD per article.

Please share :)

Chapter title: A BIG BREAK

On top of the short timeline, one of the biggest challenges the Street Fighter Alpha team faced was their lack of experience. While the game was led by Funamizu - a series veteran who had overseen multiple Street Fighter II games - the team also consisted of a number of younger members, including planner Hideaki Itsuno.

At the time, Itsuno was new to Capcom, having worked on a couple of obscure quiz games, and Alpha served as a turning point in his career. Following Alpha's release, Itsuno moved into various leadership roles, overseeing Capcom's first attempts at 3D fighting games, working on key 2D fighting games like Capcom vs. SNK, and eventually heading up the Devil May Cry and Dragon's Dogma action franchises and becoming one of Capcom's most popular game directors.

He says it all started when Funamizu noticed him playing a game from Capcom rival SNK.

HIDEAKI ITSUNO

Street Fighter Alpha planner, Capcom Japan

They were short on staff, and my boss [Funamizu] saw that I came into the office early every morning to play the Neo Geo - I was playing King of Fighters '94. So my boss was like, 'Hey, how about you become the new planner for Street Fighter Classic?' 'Street Fighter Classic' is what Alpha was called at the time; it was abbreviated 'SFC'. This was around the time Super Famicom was released. Since it had the same abbreviation as 'Super Famicom', we were confident the game would eventually be ported over to the Super Famicom, right?

So when I was given that opportunity, I was like, 'Yeah, absolutely. I want to have an opportunity to work on this.' Internally, I was freaked out. I had absolutely no confidence I could make this happen. But how many times do you have a chance as a new employee, being given this great opportunity? I felt like, If I back down now, then I'm not going to be able to do anything in the future, so I jumped on the opportunity.

SEIJI OKADA

Street Fighter Alpha lead programmer, Capcom Japan

Yeah, I learned that the Alpha team had been given a three-month deadline to make the game. So even though I was working on something else, I thought to myself, There's no way they'll make it without my help. That's how I ended up joining the team. [...] I had been doing research on the PlayStation, and it was my first time learning about 3D. But then, just as I was starting to understand it, I had to switch over to Street Fighter Alpha.

NORITAKA FUNAMIZU

Street Fighter Alpha planner, Capcom Japan

Yeah, we had a three-month deadline. I mean, it was initially three months, although I guess the game really took six months in the end.

Incredible to think that Capcom had the confidence to put Street Fighter Alpha into the hands of a team with lots of new hires and initially gave them just three months to get it made.

Loved this so much when it came out. Very flawed in lots of ways but that just made me like it even more.

Really wish Konami would hand it over to the likes of @nightdivestudios.bsky.social for another N64 remaster.

Would like to hear your thoughts on it. Been a big Damrey fan for years and would love to know if there were more games like it. Absolutely bone-dry sense of humour sometimes as well.

Can't really remember much of BotW's soundtrack at all.

Regardless, I'd be interested in domestically released CDs of classic soundtracks I'd actually play instead of overpriced vinyl. Was more than happy to leave that format behind the first time.

Yep. Beautiful slow burn of a story that focused on the people instead of the mechs. Loved the way the investigators were piecing everything together in the background.

Yeah, same. I mainly like the films or series on their own merits, rather than being a fan of the genre. Tend to prefer the older stuff too.

The body horror in Akira completely blew my mind back then and I recall feeling queasy afterwards. I'd never seen anything like it, especially in animation.

Oh, curious about what was on terrestrial TV back then! I only remember that Akira screening and not much follow-up. Even the Ghibli films were buried in the late night schedules over on Sky, which seems unthinkable now.

Several things:

1. Super Play's reporting introducing me to what anime actually was
2. The BBC's screening of Akira in 1994
3. Getting cable TV in 1996 and taping Tenchu Muyo from the Sci-Fi Channel overnight
4. Seeing Porco Rosso late at night on Sky Movies before Ghibli was well-known in the UK

I wrote a long article about Rieko Kodama, her career at Sega, the evolution of her company, the games she worked on (including some canceled games and/or games for which she is not credited), the status of women and working conditions in the video game industry, etc.

What's funny is that I was using Imgur to host hidden albums for my sales posts on forums. Because of their tantrum I now can't even access the account that hosts my own, original photos without using a VPN. I'd also be highly unlikely to use their service if it ever became available again.

This section of Silent Hill may be the most effective horror-craft I've yet experienced.

I'm over 40 and I still occasionally have a recurring nightmare where I'm lost and/or trapped in a school. The developers successfully turned my nightmare into a video game level.
