^this is my biggest concern. We will lose countless species, for sure, but as long as life exists, evolution will persist in diversifying new taxa as niches come available.

The bigger worry to me is our own ability to survive, and our ability to protect the things that we care about.

Turtle research in general lags behind other taxa. About 92,000 papers include "freshwater turtle" worldwide (only 7,000 in Australia) compared to over 100,000 for "snake Australia" and over 3 million for "bird Australia".
