Unfortunately that 2nd one has been hijacked to support a whole bunch of ideas that are not necessarily correct.

My pet gar that I donated to Shedd Aquarium would recognize me and swim over to say hi when I visited her exhibit ❀️🐠

A rare hybrid gar, I raised her since she was 2 inches long, and had to re-home her when I moved to Chicago. I was happy I could visit her in her new home!

Also, a range of native predators (birds, water rats/rakali, etc) could still access nests protected by islands and fences, but their total predation impacts was nowhere close to what foxes achieve.

Mitigating Fox Predation on Freshwater Turtle Nests: Comparing Effectiveness of Three InΒ Situ Protection Methods Floating islands provide the best protection for freshwater turtle nests, compared to fenced nesting beaches and individually protected nests. However, all three methods are better than leaving nests...

New paper out! Christina Hunter used artificial nests to compare floating islands, fenced beaches, and individual nest protection to protect turtle nests from invasive foxes. The outcome was that all three methods worked, but islands are probably the best.

If we invested in it properly we wouldn't have to make such choices.

But... submarines and nukes and fast cars, etc

^this is my biggest concern. We will lose countless species, for sure, but as long as life exists, evolution will persist in diversifying new taxa as niches come available.

The bigger worry to me is our own ability to survive, and our ability to protect the things that we care about.

Give it 50 million years and it will be fine.

I'm sure that timeline is just perfect for most people, right?

"Ms Finocchiaro told a group of NT paediatricians who had written to her expressing "deep concern" over this week's changes that they were wasting their time." "I will do my job, which is to run the NT, and they can do their job, which is to look after sick children."

Turtle research in general lags behind other taxa. About 92,000 papers include "freshwater turtle" worldwide (only 7,000 in Australia) compared to over 100,000 for "snake Australia" and over 3 million for "bird Australia".
