That's like how we first saw Willi Carlisle, opening for Lost Dog Street Band, and as much as they were great, Willi absolutely stole the show for us

Oh dang, that's too bad! She's so much fun (and I bet that whole show with American Aquarium was awesome)

I haven't, added to tomorrow's playlist!

And while we're sharing, if you're not familiar with Emily Nenni, she's been a fixture in my rotation this year, even more so after seeing her live here in May

It looks like their time together won't extend to the southeast leg of the tour (though I won't be mad about Clover County opening either)

Shit, they, apologies to Olive

I'm not familiar, but I'm going to fix that posthaste! This is extremely my jam πŸ₯°

Thank you! Everyone can enjoy sports, if we would just provide safe and welcoming spaces for people to explore and find joy and success and community

(also my mom was the rink GM and my dad ran the hockey program, so I had some institutional muscle behind me πŸ˜…)

I coached for a couple spring/summer seasons during college and loved it so much, but I was fortunate to have kids whose parents understood the drill - off-season short-season youth roller hockey is NOT serious business

I'm so grateful to have gotten into coed softball here, it's been such a boon to my overall health, and I so wish we could've had more support to help make sports accessible for folks when we tried to start up a queer sports "league" here a couple years ago

I never thought of myself as really athletic until I started engaging in LGBTQ+ spaces, when I learned how much my outward presentation had allowed me to engage with sports in ways that people who were out/less "conforming" never got the chance to do.

AMEN!

I didn't feel like I could embrace certain aspects of my identity that I knew to be true as a teenager, and having rec and club sports gave me so much to help buoy myself. It breaks my heart that so many kids like me are actively being told they're not welcome to experience that connection and joy

07.08.2025 00:27 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Honestly this is my biggest issue with the way kids' sports are treated as stepping stones to pro athletics: I was able to find so much community and identity through sports growing up, and it sucks that so many kids are missing out on that

07.08.2025 00:27 β€” πŸ‘ 7    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

And the thing is, *it's not supposed to be about staying competitive*. That's a big part of where the bullshit about excluding trans kids finds support, by capitalizing on parents' fears about their kid losing out and having no other options after they put all their chips on "Sports"

Yeah, facilities upkeep isn't cheap, and finding people to organize the leagues, officiate games, and coach the kids is harder with a smaller pool to draw from

The professionalization of youth sports is a plague, for sure

06.08.2025 23:45 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah, I acknowledge that growing up in a small town/large rural district is different than growing up in a city/large suburb, that's what I'm pointing out. Also if you think rural district athletes/families aren't facing pressure to get into travel leagues, you haven't been paying attention

06.08.2025 23:43 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

My only (very minor) quarrel with this is that radius wouldn't have covered my hometown school district for anyone pre-HS, this would be tough in really rural areas

Not disagreeing with anything else said, but a tie isn't a defeat, so it's not technically wrong

But also, the program is so cool and tons of great atmospheric scientists have come out of that dusty place

Gotta love the TTU NWI - Lubbock is a massive parking lot, but there are worse environs for partying than parking lots?

Not me realizing I'm probably older now than half the parents who were screaming at 16-yo me about reffing calls in 12u & 10u roller hockey...

Like, there are probably more angry dads than angry moms, but of those sunsets, I'll take angry dad almost every time
