balatro is basically rummy-o as a game loop (you have a random deal and you do the best you can to organize that), the meat of it is that the scoring is exponential and so you're always playing against that curve; any decision you make now is for/against yourself later on

the surprising thing is that often the 'real' board games for adults are actually the former

we played rummy-o and while I think it's satisfying to rearrange things and make runs and do the grand dance, you still are still mostly just performing it

I like that flavor, but it's missing some meat

this cabin has a huge cupboard of board games and I'm trying to identify why I like some and not others

theory: you can categorize all board games into two groups

- games that you perform (there's a right next move and you just robotically do it)

- games that you play (every choice has pros/cons)

ultimately I see LLMs for APIs like 3D printing for hardware: it is shockingly useful when you have object A and object B that were never ever designed to go together, but can make a bespoke attachment point between them

even if it did nothing else but be flexible, that's sooo useful already

yeah, this was also my intention, if just as the amorphous API glue layer between different things: if I'm basically cron job scraping a twitter profile for updates, and it's copying and pasting stuff into my client anyway, it can also sort and judge them for me at the same time

A blue dragonfly with transparent wings marked by dark veining rests on green foliage. The dragonfly’s segmented abdomen appears powder blue, and its compound eyes are dark. Yellow and green leaves create a natural backdrop with some autumn coloring visible.

A large swallowtail butterfly with cream-colored wings marked by black veining and borders feeds on bright yellow flower petals. The butterfly’s hindwings display vibrant blue and orange eyespots. The wings are spread wide as it perches on the golden flower.

A black, densely spiny caterpillar crawls on bright green grass blades. The caterpillar’s body is covered in dark bristles or spines, and water droplets are visible on both the caterpillar and surrounding grass, suggesting recent rain or morning dew.

Two brown snails with glossy, spiral shells rest on wet rocks in a shallow creek. Clear water flows around and over the rocks, creating reflective patterns. The snails appear to be positioned close together on the water-smoothed stone surface.

the UI is muted, of course, because the loud stimulus and flashing buttons are overwhelming

I dunno why everyone's talking about the death of third spaces

we got invited to TWO different bodies of water this afternoon, and a party in someone's garage tonight

you can just do stuff wherever you want

in classic small town fashion, we went to lunch as two people and then saw a guy we knew who joined, and then they saw a guy drive past and waved, and so on - by the time we cashed out our table was 13 people

you're never far from everyone you know

ultimately I wonder if the evolution is some sort of omni client, almost like an RSS reader

you plug in twitter folks, bluesky folks, subscribed substacks, some subreddits...

and it all comes through one dashboard, organized how you want

I've seen this take before, but (at least in my school experience) it was the complete opposite: STEM starts from epistemology, but social starts from "you should know what these old guys thought. no questions"

I do think we'll eventually use a royal "you" to address the mesh net of assistants in our lives

"can you turn on the lights" gets executed by the raspberry pi and "can you bring in the groceries from the trunk" by the robot and so on

asking for outcomes, not managing players
