My thought on this is economists spend a lot of time arguing about which variable 'causes' which other and causality just can't work like that. We are dealing with abstractions that are jointly determined by things that happen in reality.

Not trying to say that means they're mechanically linked but the idea they're not linked at all seems odd to me, things that affect one plausibly affect the other in many cases.

If I elect to consume one fewer bottle of cremant de Loire consumption and imports in GDP will both fall. If the bottle costs me 10 and cost Sainsbury's 5 to import both will fall by 5 no?

Maybe I'm being too charitable but I don't think he's saying 'households save, which leads to current account surpluses'. I think he says 'household savings and current account surpluses are the effects of policies that reduce consumption'.

Having read petis book I don't agree with your characterisation of his view on savings as a variable that households or businesses choose. He seems more aligned with your own, eg in the case of china he argues that forced saving is absolutely a result of government policies to reduce consumption.
