NIH funding supporting the HMMER and Infernal software projects has been terminated. NIH states that our work, as well as all other federally funded research at Harvard, is of no benefit to the US.

Censor, purge, defund: how Trump following the authoritarian playbook on science and universities I have mapped 35 of the Trump administration's attacks on science and universities to the authoritarian playbook - and consider what it means for attacks still to come

My latest post is now out.

I show how Trump's attacks on science and universities are neither random nor new - they fit very precisely into the authoritarian playbook.

This means we can guess what might come next and prepare - and we must!

Re DNA sequence DBs: While sequence is shared across #INSDC databases #ENA #Genbank #DDBJ, the presentation and granularity of annotations/metadata can differ notably, with diff. benefits, impacting searches and downstream analyses. All INSDC databases must be maintained - annotations are important

These are the 20 most-studied bacteria β€” the majority have been ignored Model microbes such as Escherichia coli hog scientists’ attention, leaving most known bacteria with few publications devoted to them.

Really important idea. It has definitely been very challenging to implement code review within the lab as we have folks working in different locations across different time zones etc. It feels like *yet another thing* to deal with when it should really be the priority.

How to write a grant?
1. The application is for the reviewer, not you, the applicant.
2. Communicate in stories.
3. Make your story cohesiveβ€”leave no puzzling gaps.
4. Make your story resonate to keep the reviewer reading.
5. Accept chance and noise in peer-review.

A relational framework for microbiome research with Indigenous communities - Nature Microbiology A framework centred on relationality among Indigenous peoples, researchers and microorganisms is presented, to guide ethical microbiome research.

Supporting our paper on Indigenous microbiome ownership we developed a framework that β€œcentres accountability to flatten historical power imbalances […] in pursuit of Indigenous research sovereignty” Again, it is a privilege to collaborate with researchers walking the talk! #co-publication
