I found the advice this article states, and advice in other places, to be useful: stay non-violent and show discipline even if initial fighting breaks out since that is the key to prevent further escalation.

And the military would see American protestors as a threat. Especially if things escalate, either accidentally or willingly by say...Trump instigating things and hoping the military cooperates (or is compelled to) even if he cannot control them perfectly.

Most importantly, whatever hesitation for a National Guardsman would have over following illegal orders would quickly evaporate IF they are fired upon during these protests.

Tensions are high, some violence could break out even from third parties.

You're right - the military is far better trained than the cops and many, especially the NCO and officers wouldn't be following illegal orders to violently crack down on protestors.

This is less clear with the enlisted ranks.

Second, I thought Robert Evans over at It Could Happen Here - Executive Disorder #7 (26m47s) made a pretty good point as well as this article over how things could go down if the Insurrection Act is passed.
