The school day ends at 3. The workday doesn’t.

For years, the private market has failed to bridge that gap, leaving families scrambling.

An Inconvenient Root: sidewalks damaged by tree encroachment affects accessibilityβ€”but do we have to lose the tree? As Victoria increases our canopy target to 40%, we’ll need smart workarounds and gentle adaptations to preserve street trees AND mobility. @strongtowns.org lists solutions here:

β€œWe tend to relate to women in the workplace based on how they make the people around them feel, rather than the work that they’re doing”

That’s the money quote. The workplace hive mind doesn’t want women to be challenging, questioning, problem solving, good speakers, opinionated, or interrupting.

It’s Easy to Hate Traffic Cameras. But They Do Save Lives. They raise issues of fairness, and critics claim they’re only about revenue. More speed and red-light cameras, however, would prevent a lot of deaths and injuries.

Yes, traffic cameras work, but it's a myth that people hate them!

Survey after survey shows that most people support automatic enforcement (and often want more of it).

This is a false controversy, fed by a minority of disgruntled drivers & journalists seeking narratives with conflict.

The more I try, observe, and experiment the more I think that the deepest opportunities to transform systems are dismissed as too simple and humble and the biggest and snazziest things people (and funders) gravitate towards are the least transformative.

We Can’t Arrest Our Way Out of Homelessness - OtherWords A new Trump order calls for arresting and ticketing unhoused people. My state tried that β€” and homelessness just got worse.

NEW: Last year, Kentucky passed a bill that paved the way to ticketing and arresting unhoused people. The state still saw an over 10% rise in homelessness.

Criminalization doesn’t house people. Care and services do.

From the current Guardian piece: "Globally a woman or girl is murdered by her partner or family member every 10 minutes." That's more than 87,00 a year, or a death toll equivalent to the casualties of a significant war. Plus all the injuries, traumas, and losses of freedom....

While some on the left demonize developers, the housing shortage continues Focusing on developers as the only problem with (or the only solution to) our housing market obscures other issues and makes it hard to make sure everyone can afford a place to live.

Subskeet of a lot of things here but the β€œpurpose of the YIMBY movement” is to make it known that people are okay with things being built near them, principally housing, usually, and certainly in my case, because we think it will make housing more affordable.

When does the next bus come? GoTriangle reduces wait time on its busiest routes The regional agency joins GoDurham and GoRaleigh in offering bus service at 15-minute intervals between Durham and Chapel Hill.

Raleigh increased bus service from every 30 min to every 15 min on its route serving Glenwood Ave. Ridership then doubled in the year that followed.

Over last year, city’s high-frequency routes have had 89% ridership growth.

People will ride when you give them service that they can rely on!

Canadians' health data at risk of being handed over to U.S. authorities, experts warn | CBC News Canadians' electronic health records need more protections to prevent foreign entities from accessing patient data, according to commentary in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

It's apparently a problem if Canadians have TikTok because the Chinese government might see their dance moves, but no one bats an eye when Canadians' health data is stored on US-owned servers and subject to American laws. www.cbc.ca/news/health/...

What’s a technology that you think is overhyped?

I’m going to give a sideways answer to this, which is that the venture capital business model needs to be understood as requiring hype. You can go back to the Netscape IPO, and that was the proof point that made venture capital the financial lifeblood of the tech industry.

Venture capital looks at valuations and growth, not necessarily at profit or revenue. So you don’t actually have to invest in technology that works, or that even makes a profit, you simply have to have a narrative that is compelling enough to float those valuations. So you see this repetitive and exhausting hype cycle as a feature in this industry. A couple of years ago, you would have been asking me about the metaverse, then last year, you would have asked me about Web3 and crypto, and for each of these inflection points there’s an Andreessen Horowitz manifesto.

It’s not simply that one piece of technology is overhyped, it’s that hype is a necessary ingredient of the current business ecosystem of the tech industry. We should examine how often the financial incentive for hype is rewarded without any real social returns, without any meaningful progress in technology, without these tools and services and worlds ever actually manifesting. That’s key to understanding the growing chasm between the narrative of techno-optimists and the reality of our tech-encumbered world.
