The collapse of curiosity driven research has occurred in STEM too. Everything has to be outcomes focused - cure disease, grow better crops, etc. But so much of what humanity has discovered is from "basic" curiosity-driven science. I'm hugely in favor of funding curiosity in every discipline.

I don’t think he has pled ignorance, has he? That’s a bit of a straw man. I still don’t have much of an opinion on him, but internal party machinations in such a situation can hardly be unexpected whatever the party. Labour is quite capable of dividing itself without any external pressure.
