And I think it was just a fun marketing stunt that record companies cottoned onto, so lots of people made Christmas records (or even records that sounded vaguely festive) in hopes of getting that accolade and also securing airplay every year thereafter.

Well, I think one big difference in the UK is that we have one 'official' singles sales chart rather than the way it's broken down by genre in the US, and certainly since the 70s there has been prestige not just in getting a no. 1, but in getting the "Christmas No. 1".

Yeah, McCartney and Lennon's songs are still in circulation - one's on my TV right now! And while objectively poor, like the Victorian carols, they have their own nostalgia-fueled appeal. There's a genuine canon of 60s/70s/80s Christmas songs that play in every shop.

Loads of otherwise quite serious bands and artists did Christmas songs in the 60s and 70s, and they were often rereleased or rerecorded throughout the 80s so they remained in public consciousness well into my adulthood, and have now become classics as hoary as any Victorian carol!

I'm interested to hear how your first British (or Scottish, which has its own twist on some things) Christmas is. Re: music, you skipped over the 60s and 70s quickly because I don't think they were big decades for festive music in th US, but it's the golden age of Christmas pop music in the UK.
