We had the audio tour thing in, and it was technically fine - Spanish woman, obviously, speaking perfect English, can't fault it. But eventually it really got on my nerves because I wanted her to occasionally express what everyone there was thinking, which was, "This is fucking weird, right?"

Mate, it's fucking huge. And basically all the internal space is completely useless! It's so badly designed it's incredible.

Singular, ridiculous things that would never have been made in normal circumstances, but happened to have been conceived at the precise right moment to allow them to be brought into being against all odds, and now persist into less courageous times to baffle us with their enormity of ambition.

Some things in this world defy categorisation. Some works of art just Are. You can't have an opinion on them, not really. They're just too immense, too loaded with the weight of passion and labour.

Just an absolutely wild thing to exist. Everything about it is a spectacularly terrible idea, but it's a folly - literally and figuratively - on such a grand scale that you can't help but be glad it's there, and they're so determined to finish it.

I visited Barcelona last year and did the Sagrada Familia tour. I honestly can't tell you if I liked it or not. It was both awe-inspiring and left me completely cold and confused. The interior is both vast and too cramped to serve its function. It's as ugly as it is beautiful. Highly recommended.

Where my attitude was always that this is a thing that exists in the culture generally, and it will manifest itself in various ways depending on the political environment.

That's really interesting, thanks! I think that attitude - that antisemitism was effectively stamped out in all the places you'd expect to find it in UK politics - made us all a bit complacent in the ensuing years, and that's why it was treated as such a shock to find it in left-wing spaces.
