We were standing together in my room, looking out of he window into the glowing evening landscape in one Of our rather rare fits f cool tenderness, ready to go down to pranzo, but it was still early, when I felt within myself a seemingly harmless, elegant, tiny fart, like a smooth little ball round itself, ready to escape. felt sure of its good behaviour, and let it slip.
At first all went well, it seemed to be as well born as I had supposed It to be, soundless. But that was its sly treachery of Italian origin, on that had not counted. Slowly, but irrepressibly, it began to spread its onion- scented wings through my dress, up to my nostrils. I was rather paralyzed, here presence of mind left me. I couldn't move. I put 1t to fate. hoped i would escape notice, wasn't penetrating or in any way blatantly vulgar, but it was undeniably present.

Certainly I W knew the feeling shame and I knew everybody around me knew that JO feeling as well. In no way was it a weak feeling, for it seemed more potent than anger, more potent than hatred, stronger even than that most disguised of emotions, fear. At that time there was no way to grapple with or transcend it. Another thing was that often it was a public feeling, needing numbers to swellits effectiveness, regardless f vhether you were the one doing the shaming the one witnessing the shaming. or the one having the shame done th unto you.
