To Help SNAP Recipients, Bookstores Set Up as Food Banks

A big thanks to the @nytimes.com for featuring us today in their article about bookstores stepping up to help food banks during the shutdown. www.nytimes.com/2025/11/11/b...

it's not that i ever doubted that being a barista was a skilled position, but my year-long effort to try to produce a half-decent latte at home has convinced me that a good barista is easily more skilled than virtually every c-suite executive on the planet

The thing about Mamdani is that he’s a talented politician but not otherworldly or one in a billion, he’s just a competent guy with popular ideas who ran against an entitled piece of shit and to me it’s a lot more optimistic to imagine 1000 campaigns like his than to view him as a unique phenomenon

In 'Pluribus,' isolation is the price of a frictionless life The haunting new show from Vince Gilligan, who created Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, is set in Gilligan's now-signature location, Albuquerque.

One of the best shows in foreverβ€”achingly sad, hugely entertaining, and really REALLY thoughtful about important things like … the value of humanity. Really! And I gave away as little as I possibly couldβ€”almost nothing that’s not in the very opaque trailer.

Such an amazing, goofy movie. I only recently discovered that it was directed by Betty Thomas. My kid is obsessed with Troop Beverly Hills, and Velda Plendor might be one of the greatest villains of all time.

The Brady Bunch Movie, in many of its ways, is a drag performance of dorky, suburban Americana. Yet, it really does love the Bradys so much in the good natured ribbing befitting the Bunch.

Just a perfect comedy that lives in my very DNA.

Open-faced pizza sandwich The Poor Man’s Pizza is an excellent sandwich.

November 6th is #nationalnachosday, but unfortunately, I write about sandwiches. Here's something I wrote about the open-faced pizza sandwich, or Poor Man's Pizza, which is almost like nachos but different. boundedbybuns.com/open-faced-p...

Holy shitballs, I never thought of turning french bread pizzas into a sandwich. Your recipe looks fantastic! Can't wait to try it.

It’s almost like if people tell you that to win you have to turn your back on poor people, or Muslims, or trans people, or immigrants, you can just say, β€œno, that’s immoral, we’re not doing that,” and keep doing good old fashioned organizing and campaigning and things will be ok

Republicans running anti-trans hatefests lost and Zohran Mamdani is a hugely vocal supporter of trans and other LGBTQ rights.

That is MASSIVELY important to look at and run on.

Roll around in all this & soak it in. This is the good shit, & it should be celebrated.

And then it should be Built on.

As an educator and a fellow fiber crafter (in my case embroidery), I love that faculty are helping their students to develop crafting habits. As the article points out, these habits can build community, promote self-confidence, help with focus during class, and teach resilience and problem-solving.

i’d also say that the GOP’s obsession with this gives candidates an opportunity to articulate and stand up for their values. β€œi refuse to make anyone feel like they don’t belong in my [state/city/community]. and i want everyone to live the best life they can achieve [insert policy slogan]”

ah, perhaps instead of pumping millions into endless factional infighting Dem donors could invest in making local Dem organizations genuine civic spaces that can reach people during and between elections

I continue to believe that the Trump *campaign* successfully convinced quite a lot of people that mass deportations did not mean mass deportations; that it meant targeted enforcement against β€œthe bad guys.”

The problem for the Trump *administration* is that no one believes that anymore.

"As Quincy’s mayor of 17 years, Koch has generated multiple controversies since he was reelected to a seventh term last year. Behind closed doors, he dedicated roughly $850,000 of public money to commission statues of two Catholic saints for a new public safety building. He also proposed a wage hike that would have given him a 79% raise, and his city clerk discounted more than a third of the signatures submitted in a ballot initiative to rein in the pay raise. Both issues are tied up in litigation."

Wild day for local politics. Big shifts on the Quincy, MA city council, and while most of the conversation is about broader city issues it is also a fight about...public religious expression!

Media orgs are confused and upset about last nights Democratic wins.

I don’t recall a β€œquestions remain” after Trump or GOP wins.

Centrists don't hate Democratic policies, but their brains have been conditioned to think all Democrats are the activist character from PCU, who was, and I can't stress this enough, not real and written to be unlikeable.

The failure of the β€œblue no matter who” crowd to rally behind Mamdani really just lays the reality of that position bare, doesn’t it?
