It's fun how everything comes back around, starting from "hey you remember those like, flash game / online kingdom builders from like '09? can we do THAT?" was a fun pitch deck
got the melancholy posting out of my system, time to go play deadlock for four hours or something lmao

good luck buddy lol
It was honestly really hard for me to play Demacia Rising on my real account; playing it was acknowledging the end. I dreaded it, avoided it for weeks.
It's so tough to enjoy your own work. You see all the flaws, the could-haves, the undone bits. But, I'm so unbelievably proud of what we all made.
I was so incredibly unconfident it was going to work in December. The holiday break was the deepest pit of despair and anxiety.
The reception to it has provided an incredible joy but also a deep, bittersweet melancholy, because I know I have to leave it behind and move on.
It's so easy to lose yourself in the process of creating a thing, in being a part of the whole that puts these things together.
Games are made by people; they are creations of love, joy, self-expression, passion, pain, sorrow, frustration - i truly believe they reflect our humanity as creators.
I won't get to WORK on it like I got to work on Demacia Rising.
There is just so much of me in this game. Who I am as a designer AND a person. There's so much of everyone who worked on it in it. Every single person has at least something there that's a tiny distilled essence of their soul.
Demacia Rising is similar to a lot of things, but it's unique since it's ultimately a progression system wrapper for a season of League.
There's nothing quite like it. Sure I could go play Total War, Civ, HOMM, or Against the Storm for another thousand hours, but it's different.
I'm so glad to have had a product manager who believed in this kind of game, who got us time and a team.
I'm so glad to have support to try and execute my wild vision; the most complicated thing we'd ever made.
I'm so happy to have worked with all of the incredible people I got to on this.
A year ago I was really unsure about being assigned to minigames. Demon's Hand was a beautiful love-letter to a game we loved, but it was tiny, disposable.
Demacia Rising may be going away, but it's left an indelible mark on me. There's so much more to explore. I could work on this for much longer.
i got to lead a game in a genre i deeply care about.
i got to pull from all my experiences in mobile game dev, progression design, and the 16 years of fulfillment League's given me as a player and now as a developer.
i got to work on a project starring my favorite champion!
I put together the ending for Demacia Rising tonight. cried at my desk for a good fifteen minutes afterwards. just feeling sentimental.
this project has just been an absolute dream to work on. i've learned so much about myself and what a talented, dedicated team can make in a year.

Letterboxd screenshot Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) Watched by Branson Reese 28 Apr 2022 Abrams isn't a man so much as he's an avatar of cultural entropy. If you make something popular enough eventually you will die or sell it off and and a person in thick rimmed glasses whose main artistic vision is that he loves to have meetings will take it and sandblast it until it's nothing. I hate to see this happen here but maybe it's good that this happened. Maybe every franchise should collapse into a version of itself that makes shareholders nod and shake each others' hands. We should learn to speak in a language that rich people who don't dream can't comprehend.

It turns out, "a lot of reasons", but if you never have to test your ideas, you never have to discover why they're not any good.

Something I've been thinking about more is that, yes old games were pumped out because of insane labor crimes *but the art still exists* Unlike today where we are still putting humans in a meat grinder to make something, but that something is valueless ephemera from gamefied gambling houses or multiplayer games that live for less than a year and then die with no way to ever access them again I don't justify Chrono Trigger putting people in the hospital because I can still play it, but I can at least still fucking play it
Been thinking about Highguard and the impermanence of games these days (which is to say, moreso that usual)
