they are so so good at designing cool bosses but they seem to have spent like 5% of their time thinking about that and about 90% of their time designing smaller rooms to put more basic enemies in

others have talked about this but i also think so many enemies and hazards doing two damage is a mistake. big bosses, fine, but just your regular spikes or drones out in the wild doing two feels terrible. it makes exploring such a slog and makes getting additional health feel pointless.

the other small design decisions are just not fun either. why do tools cost shells? you’re already limited in how many you can use between rests! why are there two currencies? why does every goddamn bench and map and fast travel point cost rosaries? why do some enemies drop one but not the other?

every time i almost got back into the game because of a great boss fight, id be immediately thrown into another boring enemy gauntlet. going from the second lace fight, which is incredible, to the coral tower was among the most dispiriting experiences playing a game ive ever had. it’s insane.

bosses are mostly great and movement feels awesome but basically all the design decisions of this game ruin it. the endless gauntlets of regular enemies over and over again are a total waste of time. it’s not hard. it’s just tedious. unfortunately it’s like a 5 or 6 out of 10 game for me.

huge disappointment. the original hollow knight wasn’t like this! you made a game that feels incredible to play and the primary combat scenario design is just “small room with lots of bullshit and no rewards”. i truly do not understand.

i know i’m beating a dead horse here but these have straight up ruined this game for me. i’m almost done, i’ll finish it, but i kind of wish i quit halfway through. i hate these gauntlet rooms man. they aren’t even that hard. they are just a waste of time.

the lace, last judge, and clockwork dancer fights in silksong are phenomenal. unfortunately team cherry thought that, instead of focusing on making more excellent bosses like those, they should make endless gauntlets of regular enemies with no rewards be the primary thing you’ll spend your time on.
