I'm convinced this will not change in book two:

every year I agonize over trying to pick my top (x) number of photos I took in the previous year, and I'll probably do that again this time, but I will admit this is the easiest slam-dunk favorite I've had in a couple of years.

Book 3 is fine btw. Bujold is approx 12million times better imo when her protagonist is a middle aged woman than when it’s a young man.

i am not usually shrill about media consumption as a moral metric. i read historical romances, a genre riddled with colonial fantasies and gender essentialism! but the thing is that none of those authors are billionaires converting my money directly into anti-trans violence

Timelike Curves, Spacelike Curves - Reactor Is it bad to cheat on your boyfriend with the fabric of space and time?

An unflinching and erotic story that examines abusive relationships and their emotionally fraught nature, loneliness and the need for connection, and the fabric of space time as a partner!

(Insert joke about "hard" science fiction here.)

i really don't know if any sff author will ever exceed extraordinary heights of tension POB achieves in it. it's a masterclass in simplicity--hole in the boat is such visceral simplicity. the reader is perfectly aware of the stakes at every moment. I only got thru bc I knew there were 15 more.

@pnh.nielsenhayden.com the sales rep for Norton used to drink at the bar I tended back in 2019 and pitched this series to me so hard and I really should have listened back then. the fact that they have so many imitators becomes immediately comprehensible once you actually read them. #5 is SO GOOD

Cat's Cradle 1-3 by Jo Rioux (graphic novels)
Charming series of middle grade fantasy adventures about a "monster tamer" & her giant dumb monster dog. Resists the old D&D monsters=evil nonsense.

Kali by Daniel Freedman (graphic novel, pub 2022)
survivor of lesbian biker gang takes revenge against the rest her group after they vote to join the fascists(!?) & are accepted(!!). Competent & compelling but jesus fucking christ. why are comics like this. do better.

Desolation Island by Patrick O’Brian
Aubreyad #5. Every book is my favorite. Intense, terrifying chase in the southern seas, genuinely riveting and hard to read, buoyed by a great wealth of natural description and POB’s flawless prose. Incredible work.

After Hours at Dooryard Books by Cat Sebastian
Continues everything we loved in You Should Be So Lucky. A gay romance/slice of life for cozy haters. Rooted in Edmund White’s writing. Expertly observed and total fanfic genius. Really really great.

I do understand: you want permission. There’s a machine in the corner wrapped in human skin that makes things out of shit and blood to look like whatever you want (as long as you don’t look too closely). You gave one to your teacher and they didn’t notice. Your boss told you to use it after they laid off half the team and it was fine. You fed one to your kids and they liked it. You want to know you can use it sometimes without me thinking less of you. You don’t need me to believe it’s useful, you just want me to be polite about it.

But I am a hater, and I will not be polite. The machine is disgusting and we should break it. The people who build it are vapid shit-eating cannibals glorifying ignorance. I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.
