In northern Mozambique, honey-hunters use vocal calls to work with wild honeyguide birds β€” and the birds learn local β€œdialects.”

New research shows calls vary by village, but honeyguides adapt, keeping this rare human-animal partnership alive across generations.

Jobim with his arms behind his back, walking on the beach at Ipanema

Remembering Antonio Carlos Jobim on his birthday πŸŽ‚
My favourite Tom Jobim portrait is this one by Otto Stupakoff, taken at Ipanema Beach in 1964.

Heitor Villa-Lobos (his hero) once said to him:
"My son, the outer ear has nothing to do with the inner ear."

This is appalling. I can say with certainty that Steve Jobs would be ashamed of Tim Cook at this terrible moment, one of many these days, and he has sullied the last year of his tenure and the Apple brand by his craven need to please shareholders over holding onto some basic values of decency.

Defenceless under the night
Our world in stupor lies;
Yet, dotted everywhere,
Ironic points of light
Flash out wherever the Just
Exchange their messages:
May I, composed like them
Of Eros and of dust,
Beleaguered by the same
Negation and despair,
Show an affirming flame.

This phenomenon is known as the β€˜Brazil nut effect,’ and there are a couple of mechanisms at play.

I had no idea Johnson had his scripts up on his site. I will be *studying* these, especially Knives Out, which I have watched about twenty times as an absolute Watchmen-level masterclass in storytelling structure.

A David Tudor day (see below). I asked Claude to help make an instrument emulating Pulsers. An hour later we had something which, while not Tudor, was too much. Polyrhythmic recursive noise percussion. 30 sliders of interaction. Teensy 4.1 to Logic, Processing for controls.

Great thread. I saw Tudor perform Pulsers at the Kitchen in 1976. As a percussionist starting to move into electronics, it was incredibly inspiring.
