A) It's Me, and you should know by now it's not wokeness I have a problem with.

B) That said, if you wish to unfollow me, no hard feelings.

All what I will say is, I wouldn't have wrote it, if I didn't see the numbers laid out like that.

Well ordered my Halloween costume, evil wizard-style hooded robes, which means I am halfway to becoming a dungeon synth musician.

The Goddess Kali vs. Mahisha the Shapeshifter - Performed by the European Recording Orchestra
YouTube video by Tiwari Composer The Goddess Kali vs. Mahisha the Shapeshifter - Performed by the European Recording Orchestra

Technically Hindu mythology, but if a Soviet precursor to Gennady Tartakovsky portraying Kali riding a lion while bearing axe and spear to take on a giant bull-headed demon while a modern badass classical music cue plays isn't sword & sorcery, then I don't know what is.

Soon to be available through Bronze Knuckles Magazine, a tale of Vegas showgirls, a "men's magazine" mogul, and the revenge of a masked supervillain.

Think of it as Die Hard at the Playboy mansion starring Lili St. Cyr with a machine gun.

Question: We all know about how Robert E. Howard would put in scenes of girl-on-girl bondage in his stories to get Margaret Brundage to do it as covers, but was any of that discussed openly in Weird Tales, whether condemnatory or in coded language of approval from readers?

A friend illustrated my previous story for the magazine "Storm God over Sin City," and as a favour, I said I'd write a story featuring things he likes to draw. His answer? "Skulls and girls with guns" so I did. Ironically due to publishing schedules, this will not have his art for this one, alas.

Jirel of Joiry by CL Moore

Today's Classic Cover is the 1982 Ace Fantasy Paperback edition of Jirel of Joiry (cover artist unknown). CL Moore originally published the Jirel of Joiry stories in the 1930s in the magazine Weird Tales. They stood out as early examples of the sword & sorcery genre and for their female protagonist

Seriously, check out Terence Stamp in Federico Fellini's VERY loose adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's "Toby Dammit/Never Bet the Devil Your Head" for SPIRITS OF THE DEAD.

LSD, Cocaine, existential despair and Mario Bava concentrated into an absolute nightmarish segment.

RIP Terence Stamp. General Zod, the Limey, Willie Garvin in MODESTY BLAISE, and my personal favourite: burnout actor Toby Dammit going insane in Federico Fellini's very VERY loose adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's "Never Bet The Devil Your Head" in SPIRITS OF THE DEAD.

Deryni Rising by Katherine Kurtz or How to Suppress Women’a Writing – The FantasyΒ Edition I'm over at Galactic Journey again - for the second time this month and a third article is coming later this month, which must be a new record for me - to talk about Deryni Rising by Katherine Kurtz, a novel which was incredibly influential and yet isn't remembered nearly as well as it should be. For the actual review, head over to Galactic Journey. If you want to know why this novel was so influential - which I obviously couldn't discuss from the 1970 POV of Galactic Journey…

Saw a sub call for a retro 50s B-Movie anthology. I think it will be very hard to top Norman Partridge's Anthology IT CAME FROM THE DRIVE-IN. Just the story titles alone, you can't beat for hitting that trash vibe perfectly.

So in a way, thank you, Robert Jordan. Thank you for all you indirectly did to revive Sword & Sorcery.

You might still have too much braid-tugging in your Wheel of Time, though. (END THREAD)

That small original fandom wanted to discuss other S&S authors, old and new, keeping interest in the genre in at least a smouldering state if not fully rekindled more recently. But the Sword & Sorcery Revival happening today owes something to those Robert Jordan novels, however indirectly, (5/x)
