Write story in 2020. Have a publisher take three years before anthology comes out. Have it now out of print and anthology delisted in just two years after as publisher closes down.

It wouldn't sting except for the delay and it's the second story that ever saw print, with my first in 2017.

But I am aware that is something more insurmountable, which is why the idea of a central organization like an SFFA as a companion to SFWA, or at least a formal awards body for the Hugos, comparable to Nebulas and World Fantasy Awards could at least defuse some of the hostility, if not all.

Thank you. That is more intangible and very present problem that should be resolved. the idea of a community willing to engage in good faith with each other instead blasting each other for not living up to superhuman ideals is the foundation of the toxicity, by people who should know better by now.

Could an organisation flame out in corruption and incompetence and self destruct? Sure. But at least it's a quick death and maybe fandom can learn from that, instead of discounting out of hand, because the current status quo will ensure the same death, only slower, louder and more agonizing.

The result is year after year of cumulative toxicity that is dissuading people to volunteer, and for less and less communities wanting to bid.

So forgive those of us who are getting tired of the "We tried nothing and we're all out of ideas, but any ideas suggested are stupid anyways."

The thing is NaNoWriMo as an activity endures, and SFWA can endure, but the Worldcon problem is trying to have it both ways. Constantly. There's no formal organisation to at least provide structure, and to take criticisms to heart. Instead it's public anger over and over.

People bring up SFWA, which despite last year's chaos does seem to be picking itself out of the rubble, due to people stepping up into formal positions to rectify issues. NaNoWriMo was a non-profit organized around an actvity that was non-sustainable for an organization.

Going by the YT author's previous writing craft videos, this seems to be a bid to attract attention from the RW Grift crowd who hype Tolkien as a special unicorn of fantasy sullied by current GrimDark *and* Romantasy at the same time. You do it for short-term gain and long-term exclusion, I guess.

In real life, Doc's actor Richard Dysart served in the US Airforce during the Korean War, so the chronology checks out.

The shared combat experience is why MacReady respects Doc.

Childes may be ex-military. I think he is. He also served in Vietnam and that's why MacReady doesn't like him.
