'Finished Turning of the Bones and.........it was a great read!
It was a mixture of zombie survival and Imaro style war epic . . . A Sword & Soul classic that deserves follow up.

I'd be more excited about the new ALIEN TV show if it were set at a Weyland-Yutani corporate retreat with one of the execs already carrying a chestburster...
...and have the entire thing written by Armando Iannucci.

Write story in 2020. Have a publisher take three years before anthology comes out. Have it now out of print and anthology delisted in just two years after as publisher closes down.
It wouldn't sting except for the delay and it's the second story that ever saw print, with my first in 2017.

Painted art of The Fantastic Four lounging on a yacht, with The Thing at the steering wheel while wearing a captain's cap. Reed Richards is enjoying a pina colada.
Laying eyes on this today has filled me with absurd delight. Art by Earl Norem.

Absolutely jaw-dropping in not just how far it goes in brutality and violence in a Comics-code approved Marvel comic, but also in how incisive thought provoking and disquieting its look at the appeal of vigilante fiction to the reader, and real life.
Writer Steve Gerber was on fire with this one.

I'll take "Animated sci-fi movies from the early 80s with sex and drug references as well as multiple Cheap Trick songs on the soundtrack." for $500, Alex, er, Allan.
I'd love the Two Minutes to Late Night to assemble an all-star crew to cover the Debbie Harry/Robin Zander song "Send Love Through."

But I am aware that is something more insurmountable, which is why the idea of a central organization like an SFFA as a companion to SFWA, or at least a formal awards body for the Hugos, comparable to Nebulas and World Fantasy Awards could at least defuse some of the hostility, if not all.

Thank you. That is more intangible and very present problem that should be resolved. the idea of a community willing to engage in good faith with each other instead blasting each other for not living up to superhuman ideals is the foundation of the toxicity, by people who should know better by now.
13.07.2025 17:50 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
Could an organisation flame out in corruption and incompetence and self destruct? Sure. But at least it's a quick death and maybe fandom can learn from that, instead of discounting out of hand, because the current status quo will ensure the same death, only slower, louder and more agonizing.
13.07.2025 14:45 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0
The result is year after year of cumulative toxicity that is dissuading people to volunteer, and for less and less communities wanting to bid.
So forgive those of us who are getting tired of the "We tried nothing and we're all out of ideas, but any ideas suggested are stupid anyways."

The thing is NaNoWriMo as an activity endures, and SFWA can endure, but the Worldcon problem is trying to have it both ways. Constantly. There's no formal organisation to at least provide structure, and to take criticisms to heart. Instead it's public anger over and over.
13.07.2025 14:41 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
People bring up SFWA, which despite last year's chaos does seem to be picking itself out of the rubble, due to people stepping up into formal positions to rectify issues. NaNoWriMo was a non-profit organized around an actvity that was non-sustainable for an organization.

Roy Thomas' announcement of the "big, brawling" Sonja Con to be held at the Travelodge Hotel in the NJ/Philadelpha area on Nov 20-21.
"PMM, FFF, MARVEL READER" sends a letter to the Red Sonja team to gush about the Sonja Con.
A point made by Claire Noto in her recent interview suggested that she believed Red Sonja could have been a breakout character in pop culture on the level of Howard the Duck. I think she might've been right, because in 1975 there was apparently a Red Sonja *convention?*

Are there any interviews with Leigh Brackett or Edmond Hamilton that confirm Hamilton rewrote Brackett's Eric John Stark stories into the novels' Secret of Sinharat' and 'People of the Labyrinth'?
The only alleged confirmation that he did is in the 1979 edition of Encyclopedia of Science Fiction.

Going by the YT author's previous writing craft videos, this seems to be a bid to attract attention from the RW Grift crowd who hype Tolkien as a special unicorn of fantasy sullied by current GrimDark *and* Romantasy at the same time. You do it for short-term gain and long-term exclusion, I guess.
09.06.2025 13:47 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
Oof, just watched a new YT video talking about how the Del Reys ruined fantasy forever for turning Lord of the Rings into formula.
Valid if hyperbolic, yet lost in cherry-picked chronological errors with Moorcock being a late-period GrimDark figure as opposed to being JRRT's pulpy contemporary.

Childes "hotheadedness" can be explained away as his own PTSD.
Childes very presence reminds MacReady of being in Vietnam and that's why he's so hostile to Childes, though he never admits it. (Thread end).

In real life, Doc's actor Richard Dysart served in the US Airforce during the Korean War, so the chronology checks out.
The shared combat experience is why MacReady respects Doc.
Childes may be ex-military. I think he is. He also served in Vietnam and that's why MacReady doesn't like him.
