CA needs to address Article 34 before this is even an option.

Also worth noting IME I have never heard β€œanti-YIMBYs” talk about why public housing doesn’t get built. Only YIMBYs

Idk if YIMBYs particularly care either way, except for how anything built by the gov ends up costing magnitudes more.

Also public housing is basically impossible in CA due to Article 34 requiring voter approval

Will, is there a single place in the country where the base zoning allows for multi family development and yet the only thing that is built is single family homes ? Does that happen anywhere at all ?

There’s a wide open lane in the upcoming LA mayoral election for someone is determinedly pro-housing and anti-ICE.

From the NAHB proceedings, 1913:

MR. LAWRENCE VEILLER, Secretary, National Housing As-
sociation, New York City:
The question is "How can we keep apartment houses and tenement houses and flats out of our city?" Before

212 NATIONAL HOUSING ASSOCIATION
we can answer that we must be sure that we want to keep them out. If we put it to a vote in any one of your cities, I think we would find it very difficult to get a vote against an apartment house. I am not for it β€”don't misunderstand me β€” but I do recognize that it provides a very convenient way of living, and because of the servant question, which Mr. Davis alluded to, a great many people prefer it. Per-sonally, I think it indicates a very bad tendency and will have a very bad effect on American life and upon our political and social conditions.
I don't think you can have
proper homes in an apartment house of the highest type.
The question is, " How are we going to stop it?" I think there is a way; at least, I have tried it and I think it is going to work. In framing our laws to regulate the construction of dwellings of all kinds, do everything possible in our laws to encourage the construction of private dwellings and even two-family dwellings, because the two-family house is the next least objectionable type, and penalize so far as we can in our statute, the multiple dwelling of any kind, whether it is flat, apartment house or tenement house.

If we require multiple dwellings to be fireproof, and thus increase the cost of construction; if we require stairs to be fireproofed, even where there are only three families; if we require fire-escapes and a host of other things, all dealing with fire protection, we are on safe grounds, because that can be justified as a legitimate exercise of the police power.
We can show the necessity of these extra precautions where many families live in a dwelling, and at the same time we have made it difficult to build apartment houses. I recommend that method to the conference.
In our laws let most
of our fire provisions relate solely to multiple dwellings,

and allow our private houses and two-family houses to be built with almost no fire protection whatever.

The β€œresidential” building code exists in the first place for very bad reasons. Don’t ever forget that. Lawrence Veiller, addressing the NAHB in 1913:

California, don't forget to vote on Prop 50. Turnout is expected to be low, and we can't afford to unilaterally disarm while rightwingers pack congress.

Of all the housing charts not made by MMI, this one is my favourite. It shows how, despite rhetoric, housing shortages aren't a global phenomenon, but they do seem to be an Anglo-American one.

Any form of media that involves an angry man telling an audience what to be angry about for several hours a day is probably not good for the human brain

Here’s the only thing getting built near the A Line in Karen Bass’s pro-housing Los Angeles: a car dealership garage. End this farce @governor.ca.gov @gavinnewsom.bsky.social and sign SB 79!

I don't think @gavinnewsom.bsky.social understands he'll be writing his legacy with how he decides on SB 79. He entered office promising millions of new homes and he's close to leaving without having gotten anywhere near that goal. Signing SB 79 is the one serious step he can take.

NYT: gone. WaPo: gone. LA Times: gone. CBS: gone. CNN: gone. MSNBC: going.

Plus almost all local newspapers & local TV news stations.

Plus almost all of social media.

The information environment is utterly dominated by the right & everything else is downstream of that.

I've thought LA should have eaten a lot of its smaller cities (esp with the SB79 35,000 population thing) but this is probably better
