imo this really is fundamental. if the people who are *building* the social internet don't get this, they won't build sustainable spaces, because they won't know how to foster good-faith engagement.

that doesn't mean you have to make yourself available to the bullies, but you do need to be able to evaluate good-faith objections to your behavior! at MINIMUM that's what you need to do anything with integrity, full stop. let alone run a social media community. let alone a really big one.

as another person who has frequently endured actual harassment on every social platform, I just want to echo that it's very possible to distinguish between actual harassment and constructive criticism. if you *run* a project (let alone a social media company) it's your responsibility to do this.

It strikes me as unfair because it seems to assume that not hitting the zeitgeist=inherently bad or a sign of mediocre writing. I don't think that's a fair starting point because that's arguably not really an expectation that's been placed upon other comparable singer-songwriters (e.g. Patti Smith).

i think this is an unfair question to ask given how very prolific she is compared to other songwriters at her level (very few) and compared to other artists with fanbases as massive as hers (very few). 8 albums in 11 years, plus "new" vault content. Of course they won't all hit the zeitgeist.

I get very nervous whenever people talk about how things will be fine because Trump is not a "competent" authoritarian. I would prefer political leaders not to assume this, but rather to firmly, urgently repudiate authoritarianism and reaffirm the Constitution before anyone competent comes along.
