I have never wanted a Blu-Ray for a commentary track so bad in my life. And even with that, my understanding is that a bunch of this is gonna have to be left unsaid for legal reasons.

I spent the last week watching so many videos about two guys I practically knew nothing about before and it made me A) appreciate much more of the inspiration for what could be dismissed as a Back To The Future parody and B) made me realize every production fact about this thing is fucking insane.

It's all anchored by a real, believable relationship between two lovable assholes who deserve each other (laudatory and derogatory). Like none of the insane filmmaking would mean anything without Matt and Jay's self-destructive, yet loving relationship.

Revising my endorsement of Nirvanna The Movie after a second viewing. This is an indie miracle kept together by documentary-style filmmaking, candid camera work, luck, timing, editing, and VFXs. And a refusal to let you know which one of these is doing the heavy lifting at any given moment.

Very niche but my answer is Bon Cop, Bad Cop 2. It’s like the movie so fundamentally misunderstood the appeal of the original. It played more as a straight drama to the original’s absurdist Canadian buddy-cop satire. It had like one joke in it and it was “lines at gov. offices are long.”

I know it wasn’t a hit but it explained Game Pass better than anything else. It gave a reason to keep subscribing rather than stop the recurring payments when you’re done playing the Day 1 games (Hi, that used to be me!).

But the problem there is that all the games on that list are pretty much playable on either PS5 and XBOX Series. A good chunk on Switch as well. System sellers aren’t the end-all but they still exist to nudge someone to pick the right ”COD Machine” that’s right for them.

There was one game that did sell the promise of XBOX and Game Pass. Small, nimble, polished. The reason you would keep a subscription going, just to enjoy as a wonderful surprise between AAA Day 1 games.

It was Hi-Fi Rush. And yeah… There you go.

It’s fair to say Playstation also did very little this gen. It’s currently wading through the aftermath of a disastrous live service push. But Starfield didn’t push the needle not because PS was intrenched but because it wasn’t that good. It was a system seller that couldn’t sell systems.
