The conversation has been had. A ton. And the simple conclusion is there aren't. I looked through the comments and no one here provided an actual example of an ethical use of AI. Assuming, we're talking specifically about generative AI and large language models, they are riddled with problems front to back. These AI companies have admitted--both on their own and in the course of the many lawsuits against them--that their businesses wouldn't be feasible without having fed in preexisting works. They claim fair use, though official judgment is still out (and, I for one, believe it's not fair use and is a violation of copyright). Additionally, they have repeatedly admitted to getting the majority of the works through pirating. They inherently broke the law to even get started. We can talk about how AI jeopardizes jobs in the creative fields. There's certainly evidence that it does with jobs that would go to artists having been replaced. There's also evidence that it doesn't because no one can name a compelling work made with AI.
Of course, jobs in the creative field aren't just writers and artists, it also includes accountants and marketing folks and administration folks. It's wrong to try to outsource their jobs to machines too. Especially ones that, y'know, have such high failure rates in what they do. We can talk about how it's incredibly draining of resources. It takes a lot of electricity--driving local electric prices up. It takes a lot of water--clearing out local water reserves. Server facilities for AI programs literally spit poison into the air and are making the communities they're in sick. We can talk about the exploitation of workers. Folks, generally in poorer countries, receiving dollars a day to sit in front of computers and flag things like child pornography and torture videos that've been incorporated in the system and need to be filtered out, without proper mental healthcare resources or money to see someone from the company they're working for.
We can talk about AI as a tool of facism. It is a propaganda machine with known issues of deeply seated racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, etc built into the coding and reflected in the output. It's also a powerful tool of misinformation. From minor misunderstandings to people genuinely questioning established historical fact, from the effects we're already seeing of people having lower reading comprehension and decreased critical thinking skills to the folks that generative AI has literally created deepfake pornography of, there is a core of changing folks understanding of reality through manipulation. In our industry, in particular, we're dealing with folks reporting that AI in the postal office has started flagging any shipping of books as obscene. It's going to continue to be a problem for censorship as people who have a vested interest in censoring material they don't agree with use AI as "proof" that they're right. And on top of all of that, just yesterday the New York Times was reporting on ChatGPT, not for the first time, being sued for wrongful death because it encouraged a teenager to kill himself and taught him how to do it.
To use an analogy, it doesn't matter if there are a couple of seemingly fresh apples in a barrel of rotten apples. You really are better off to dispose of all the apples because the ones that may look okay, probably still have worms in 'em. We've had the conversation. The question is whether you personally can still justify "ethical" uses with all of that in mind. I know I can't.
Sharing my response to the guy I just yelled at on LinkedIn over his question of "why can't indie comics talk about ethical uses of AI?" TLDR, doesn't exist. But if you're looking for talking points...

24.08.2025 14:40 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me? Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.
