I don’t treat myself to things. The 3 shows I’ve been to since returning to the US in 2014, someone else paid for my ticket.

I also balk at going to things alone.

So I’m excited not just to see my fave comedian, but to remember that my ability to do things doesn’t depend on other people 😊

At the same time, Mokumokuren is human too, and this story is personal to them. They want to be understood, to connect with readers & not be inundated with cries that they’re telling their own story wrong. I’d defend my story too, hoping that people care enough to listen even if they don’t have to

Criticism is valid! Always & forever. As a writer myself I believe that once a story is with readers, it’s theirs. Authors can only do their best to make their message clear & then let it go. But if someone really wants a different story from the one they perceive—the answer is fanfic, not bullying

Humans obsess over defining things; it helps us know where we stand in society and feel in control of life.

But sometimes it's good to let things be undefined or liminal. That's part of life, too.

It isn't queerbaiting to let a gay character and an ace character love each other non-romantically.

Shipping is up to the fans. Some creators ask that you respect characters' sexuality(like if one is canonically aroace or something) but that's technically out of their control.

Mokumokuren has said that Yoshiki and "Hikaru" love each other but their relationship has no label. It's unique to them.

I think you’re mixing up the order of events. Mokumokuren has been getting backlash from readers for “dropping the romantic plot line.” All they’re doing is clarifying that there never was one. That isn’t imposing anything, it’s simply trying to reassure reactive readers that it’s not queerbaiting.

The author never said it isn’t gay. They said it’s not a romance. Gay people don’t need to be in a romantic relationship in order to be gay. Close, loving relationships can and SHOULD take on many different forms, even for queer people

Part of the problem, I think, is audiences are used to ONLY seeing queer stories told as romance. We need more stories like HgSN, where the characters are queer regardless of whether they end up in a relationship or not. Romance is fine but it’s not always the story that needs to be told!
