I don’t know how to say this in a way that doesn’t seem condescending but I hope you can hear my compassion when I say it. I’m sorry that you are struggling and that my attempt at solidarity and engagement triggered you this badly. It was the opposite of my intent.

I was literally trying to reach out with you with solidarity, talk with you about the fraternity of men and bell hooks radical hope for male love and you treated me like I stepped in dogshit. I didn’t deserve that.

I wasn’t giving feminists any sort of directive. I was simply talking about my own experience of radfem nihilism. I wasn’t asking you to account for them, defend them or have an answer. I am telling you how I relate to men, manhood and masculinity. How I see the way forward for us as men.

It was never my intent to derail. You criticized feminism and I agreed with you about its failures. I have agreed with your premise from the start and yet somehow you are the only man allowed to have a grievance. Even when our grievances align. You invented a whole other person to disagree with!

I specifically seek out other trans men to talk about this with. I thought we would be on the same page about creating compassionate space around this and I was wrong. You are telling me loud and clear that YOU are not a person I should surround myself with to discuss these issues. Message received.

“What part of that is hard to grasp?” The part where I’m grieving. And this grief in particular has stuck around because it is so politically charged that I am often re-harmed when trying to process it openly. I refuse this gendered expectation that good men shouldn’t grieve inconvenient pain.

I think this might be the source of our misunderstanding. I don’t want you to answer for the mean feminists who abandoned us. I was hoping to sit with you in that abandonment. You were criticizing radfems and I was commiserating. Not everything is a fight!

It feels like you’re punishing me for feeling abandoned. Angry with me for being soft and sore in places I’ve been hurt. I don’t understand that impulse. Are you uncomfortable when other men express vulnerable feelings?

What is hard to grasp is a lot of these women are trans. They are my sisters. They are supposed to be my chosen family. Abandonment isn’t a theoretical position. It is my lived experience and I’m asking you to sit in that feeling with me. You don’t have to, of course.

I wish I could talk about this experience without people jumping to the conclusion that I am in alignment with patriarchy. As if my twenty years spent working for gender justice means nothing now because I transitioned. I should be allowed to mourn the loss of my community.

Feminists were my first introduction to gender. They helped me deprogram from the conservative family I was raised in. They constantly urged me to be my most authentic self. To be caring and responsible. And I believed them when they said all men are bad, so I repressed my manhood for decades.
