As International Women’s Day 2025 approaches, @careintuk.bsky.social’s Parliament drop-in was a powerful reminder of why UK aid is vital in empowering women and girls worldwide.

Their incredible work strengthens women’s voices and leadership, enabling them to stand up for their rights.

Last night @careintuk.bsky.social gathered MPs and women's rights activists to rally support for gender equality spend. The message to the Foreign Secretary was clear:

REVERSE THE CUTS. PROTECT GENDER EQUALITY.

Cutting the aid budget to play for defence feels like undercutting significant soft power in the hope of getting a defence spend Trump will like. Might be a necessary evil, but it’s an evil all the same: people make a terrible case for aid but it works in our self-interest. It’s not just altruism.

Thank you so much Alice Macdonald for raising this important question on how UK aid can prioritise #genderequality.

While we agree with Minister Dodds that effective mainstreaming is needed, we also need aid targeted specifically at gender equality.

We're asking for a target of at least 20%.

Part of the What Works Programme's work to mark 2024's #16DaysOfActivism included a joint reception with the Foreign and Home Office, with speeches from both Ministers.

It was great to see this cross-Government collaboration.

Together we can end violence against women and girls.
