Whilst political engagement is positive, it’s important that Ireland’s mainstream parties/media don’t follow their UK counterparts and start convincing themselves that a certain minority of the electorate must be appeased at all costs.

The spoiled votes number is probably the most depressing thing because some on the far right will see that as vindication of their recent calls to do just that. The commentariat will say that this was a sign people wanted Maria Steen. The Government will just shrug its shoulders and move on.
