Circling back to your original point, I think we’re very fortunate as regards the games we’re missing Kai and MØ for right now, as the effects of their respective absence would tell in a tougher run of fixtures than the one we have between now and NLD

Tbf I don’t think big Gabi has been at his imperious best (yet) this season, so if he’s at 90%, we’re able to cover that and we’re this good anyway …

This is just so, so good - it’s also incredibly satisfying because in a sense, given we’re competing with two state-owned clubs and soon a third if they sort their pride issues out, we’re punching above our weight to be like this. Or, β€œdon’t talk about spend, fella, talk about sensible spend”

Good blog (City lost to Brighton btw not Brentford). I guess the dilemma is between enjoying the moments and realising the "normalised brilliance" of this manager and team is never going to be truly appreciated until they've won one of big two; one of those things we can still choose to do innit : )

Exactly, and getting it by hook or crook to that wrecking ball is hardly more aesthetically pleasing than being good at crossing from corners and free kicks to any number of different players

I know we live in the most disingenuous of times, but those complaining about us scoring so many from set pieces seem to conveniently overlook how it is directly related to how teams set up against us *precisely because they'd get whooped otherwise* (see e.g. games of recent years against PSV). Grrr

Exactly, because if you overlook how the threshold for VAR intervention (β€œclear and obvious”) wasn’t met then you’re essentially saying I acquiesce to the game being re-refereed. And that’s the point at which the game really is doomed.

Hard disagree on penalty, the point is not whether it was a foul or not but whether it was a clear and obvious error - the very clearly stated threshold for VAR intervention week after week by Webb. If it takes the best part of five minutes, multiple angles, and numerous slow-mo replays to decide...

Both a very football story and a far more pervasive one, too - the tale of a civilization beset by a loneliness epidemic, an ever-intensifying urge for instant gratification, and at heart of it all an inability to relate across difference and appreciate life as a development process. Lovely article!

Good summation, I’d add that the next β€œblock” will be a good litmus test of how this team has evolved / addressed one of the two issues stopping them winning the league (injuries being the other) - namely, ability to break down teams like the very four we will play next in the league

Incredible that Ben White missed training for reasons unknown, could be something as simple as got locked in the toilet cubicle, and there's people all over the internet saying "when do we need to talk about Ben White?" or "I fear his career is over". Whatever happened to taking things as they come?

Taylor, of course, also makes a number of valid points about the culture of intolerance and impatience - and abuse that comes with it - that no doubt makes it a very unpleasant job. In the PL at least, his boss Howard Webb is massively letting him and his colleagues down - the 🐟 rots from head down.

The nub of it is in your final paragraph: in the almost 200-person group chat, large majority seem(ed) to believe we were/are getting our own Haaland (or close enough). The more realistic / less disappointing expectation is we've got ourselves a solid rotation option for Kai with different skillset.
