Realised that my (me=European, living in Europe) feed had waaayy too much Trump-doom material in it, and that this was dragging my spirits down...UNTIL I discovered the veritable ray of light that is @aoc.bsky.social

Over The Shoulder

I think of Voyager
engulfed
by darkness,
the fingertip
we cut and threw,
shunned
by the perennial forgiveness of Earth’s parochial gravity;
pushed beyond
the staccato braille
laid down by doddering asteroids;
beyond the glances
from the most curious and odd
unhinged moons;
brushed only by the breath of those youngest,
still nameless
gods.

We hold a famed picture of its last look back
at our pale blue dot:
all of us
are drowning
within that single suspended
tear.

think if you're broadly a centrist and were suuuuuper concerned about attacks on free speech from the left and so you decided to give the right a hearing then you need to realise you were taken for QUITE the ride (and don't really have anyone to blame but yourself)

Targeted Killings: Israeli soldier from Munich allegedly shot unarmed men in Gaza Two snipers in the Israeli army are thought to have committed war crimes in Gaza. Video evidence appears to corroborate those accusations. One of them is a young man from Bavaria.

One hell of an investigation by the journalists involved. Saddened but not surprised about the inaction by prosecutors though, it seems there is a wide international consensus that the IDF can do whatever it likes to whomever it likes.

My greatest struggles are rooted in the "you can achieve anything, as long as you try hard enough" message that I internalised as a child, mostly from kids' TV.

It's a lie. Well-intentioned, probably, but still false.

Please, if you're trying but not achieving your aims, *it is not your fault*

Germany and Italy say they export lots of goods to Kyrgyzstan (black), but Kyrgyz import data (blue) show little arriving from either. Kyrgyzstan is just what it says on the invoice. This stuff obviously goes to Russia. Poland & Lithuania stopped this racket. Why won't Germany and Italy do the same?

Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me?
Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.

I'm calling it: we need less AI, not more. From devaluing effort, to wrecking the environment, to stunting creativity; in some ways, AI is already an existential threat to mankind that if left unchecked, is only going to get worse.

Not happy to do this but, fuck it: Shameless plug to an article on this topic that I wrote a few days ago, coming up.

Gaza’s hospitals were meant to heal. Now they’re targets The systematic destruction of Gaza’s hospitals is not just barbarism, it’s a moral line crossed forever

Mr. Antiwar President has us inches away from a Civil War at home and a nuclear war abroad in defense of an ally that is starting random hot regional wars to detract from its ongoing genocide. I’m sure all of this will just naturally cool off.
