If the UBI was anything near enough to live on it would remove a ton of people from the labour market, but at the same time it’d probably have to come alongside huge tax increases, so I’d be concerned about the viability of a lot of min wage work.

He’s trying to find a cafe server for $0.25 above minimum. Asking someone to relocate to Tofino for that is nonsense. The wages for cooks and Sous chefs are also pretty shitty given the relocation costs.

Like for a bunch of these he’s trying to hire at barely above minimum wage. Of course those are unfilled in a place like Tofino with their housing costs. You can stay in the city and make far better wages.

I looked up the wages they’re offering; if this was a job in the city these wouldn’t be terrible, but if you’re asking a worker to relocate for them they’re way too low.

This isn’t particular to Tofino, this is how employment markets work everywhere.

If this business owner couldn’t hire TFWs the positions would be unfilled and he’d be forced to raise wages to attract people to them, while the existing staff could demand more. This is just class warfare, plain and simple.

This is bullshit. There’s so many people in our city who have worked in and want to work in Tofino, most places there just don’t actually offer the wages needed to pay for the inflating housing costs there.
