This reminds me of the personal papers we have from an alum who attended high school, prom, & was valedictorian at Manzanar, a concentration camp for Japanese and Japanese-American people. We use these in teaching constantly and we always have to add context so students understand the implications.

We are a nation of secular laws precisely so that we can worship - or not - any faith - or not - that we choose.
We are protected in our faith, or lack thereof, by the radical notion that church and state are separate.

Colorado's Constitution doesn't mention God either. And it only mentions religion thusly: "The free exercise and enjoyment of religious profession and worship, without discrimination, shall forever hereafter be guaranteed"

The Constitution refers to "religion" only twice: once in Article VI, which prohibits religious tests for public office, and again in the First Amendment, which prevents the government from establishing a religion and guarantees freedom of religion.

One of my favorite movies is 'Queen Margot', based on the Alexandre Dumas novel, which starts off with the St Bartholomew's Day Massacre.
The men who wrote the Constitution deliberately looked at centuries of bloody wars of religion in Europe and said, "Nope, we are not gonna be that."
