Yesterday we had a meeting on the block. We had to. The state of the government and its affect on the community was the topic. We discussed the best way to proceed in all of the uncertainty. The other day there was no SNAP in November. Then it was half. Then it was none again. Then it was half again. Then 65%. Then 35% in the exact same day. So you can see what I mean when I say, uncertainty. The hokey pokey of this administration had us wondering should we keep doing dinner everyday and lean in, or stop because people are getting a percentage (I think? ) of their SNAP benefits? Now, preparing meals outside on a street corner in the summer is hard. But, outdoors in a Chicago fall/ winter is brutal. We've done pop ups before in the winter but never everyday... BUT, knowing how difficult it could be and will be, every single volunteer who cooks and shows up to serve everyday STILL voted that we can't stop. The kids need us. Even with a fraction of the benefits. Even with the indecisiveness of the government. Even in the cold, wet, ick, that is sure to come. Even without funding. They all voted to still show up. And then people in the neighborhood started dropping whatever they had in their pockets on the table. Because we're all in this together. 🎶"I wish I could give you this feeling. Whatever late capitalism is, it seems to be careening into this embrace of growth by negation. Through that prism, it's hard not to see the advances in something like artificial intelligence less driven by technological breakthroughs as by a society that has, over years, over decades, become normalized to a greater and greater magnitude of both loneliness and theft, such that a sputtering algorithm badly trained on the stolen work of real human beings might be celebrated with a straight face as something approximating humanness. Under this ordering, it is not some corporation's increasing capacity for better that drives the extractive world, but everyone else's increasing tolerance for worse. Unconfronted, this kind of negation will not remain confined to widgets or labor or even the economic world. When the bigger wildfires come— as they already have-the industries whose callous disregard helped bring this about will depend on our ever-growing tolerance for calamity. When climate change upends the lives of billions, our governments will depend on our ever-growing tolerance for violence against the hordes of nameless others to enact its cruelest, most violent fortressing. In time, negation becomes all there is. To walk away from this system is to speak the only language the system will ever understand.

I’m an Elementary sped teacher and I never put my students on computers except for mandated tests. Everything else I teach without screens.

She’s just telling us we’re going to solve political issues by just working harder.

Really annoyed my principal emailed staff telling us we need to solve the declining student enrollment issue by coming up with how to make our school more visible. It’s not that ICE was targeting our families all summer. Or that rent is too damn high so people are moving. Or birth rates are falling.

Parents of young children should be organizing relentlessly for free universal childcare because this seems unsustainable. Truly. At the very least, folks should be vociferously backing politicians who run on this.
