I was the kid who didn't like "outsiders" touching me (anyone not living in my house), but I was forced to give hugs, and resented it. When my nephew was a kid, he hated it and my brother tried to force him to hug me. No way, I let him lead. Over time he initiated hugs. 💞

I was once married to a man with borderline personality disorder. My current boss has narcissistic pd. It is a very thin line to walk between understanding that it is not a conscious choice for them, but also being sick of their shit. Left the husband, not (yet) the job.
