It’s a messy and not totally successful movie, the backstory with Hoskins’ cooking personality mom is super weird and doesn’t quite fit, but I dug the stuff that did work. Hoskins’ performance is so layered and pitiful and is really the secret sauce

Just watch the last 30 minutes, everyone stops talking and starts driving real fast.

2026 watch #19: Heartburn. Men ain’t shit, the Nora Ephron and Carl Bernstein story. Streep is, unsurprisingly, so good as Ephron’s proxy, navigating the collapse of a marriage while pregnant. Features a fun early film appearance by Catherine O’Hara playing a gossipy socialite.

2026 watch #17: Song Sung Blue. No one's more surprised than me that I enjoyed the Neil Diamond tribute band movie. It doesn't land all the big emotional swings, but it's well made and its heart is in the right place. I can't help but root for two weirdos who match each other's freak

2026 watch #16: Prizzi's Honor. What a strange movie. There are few tones more off-putting than dark comedy that falls flat. The inexplicably broad, goofball performances (even from Anjelica, who won her Oscar for this of all things) work against, not with the story's cynicism.
