Pointing out the MPD has overspent $20 million of the public dollar is oppression actually.

Pointing out the MPD has overspent $20 million of the public dollar is oppression actually.
05.12.2025 23:24 β π 22 π 5 π¬ 0 π 0Aurin Chowdhury rebutting Michael Rainville on his "defund the police" accusation. MPD has done nothing but ramp their budget off the chart. And then overspent that budget by $20 million. "That's the opposite of defunding the police. So let's give it a break."
05.12.2025 22:46 β π 178 π 39 π¬ 4 π 11This coming out the same day as a story about MPD being $20M over budget while the council meeting went over an amendment to reduce the council staff, giving the money to MPD. Is pretty rich.
Whereβs my typewriterβ¦.
I have a grand total of zero patience left for the top paid city staff in charge of community safety not being able to answer basic questions about crime trends and personnel allocations as we deliberate our budget.

Isnβt this also their reason for horse cops?
05.12.2025 20:25 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Hell yea @katiecashman.bsky.social is the best.
I know itβs Commissioner Barnetteβs job to stand there and take all the heat for public safety failures that Frey wonβt take any accountability for. But itβs embarrassing that heβs this unprepared for basic questions. βAw shucks idkβ routine is lame.
So letβs make sure I got this right.
Frey: gets a raise
MPD: gets a raise
Council Members: less staff for you for you to run council meetings.
If you were an executive looking to consolidate power. This would be one way to do it.
Guarantee this amendment wouldnβt be brought forward if the conservatives had a majority on the council. They want to purposely make the work of governing harder for the progressives.
05.12.2025 02:21 β π 7 π 4 π¬ 0 π 0Sarcastic: need influencers to get back into greasy spoon diners. Start posting about βan affordable counter-service meal is the hot new date spot!β
Real: somethin like an expansion of the Vibrant Storefronts initiative to subsidize rent costs here for diverse business owners. Think grocery/bodega.
I feel like these places have money to burn for about that amount of time and thatβs why they keep popping up. Only places with significant backing can get in with the rent environment here rn.
Thatβs probably the profitability timeline and otherwise itβs a business loss on the taxes!
Youβll get a data center and YOU WILL LIKE IT
05.12.2025 18:57 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Like I think we have enough βnightlife entertainmentβ options. Community seems to feel that way. But every new development seems to be βtech nightlife entertainment built for posting on social mediaβ. Counter intuitive imo!
05.12.2025 18:51 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Thereβs so much concern from the neighborhood association, and in general, about the bars. Valid concerns about safety/cleanliness of the streets to be fair.
They pushed Rainville for uber/lyft blackout zones on weekends. Dont seem to be enforced tho. Every new business seems to add to the problem!
It really would.
05.12.2025 18:46 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0βItβs acting on recent trendsβ pls I beg. Stop the tech speak. Not everything has to be βdata drivenβ or whatever. People like to hang out at the bar. Itβs not innovative πππ
05.12.2025 18:30 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0i love how we keep hearing there are more and more downtown residents than ever and yet all they get is nonsense like this and talk of a billboard district while useful stores like the dollar general close
05.12.2025 18:07 β π 8 π 2 π¬ 3 π 0βWhy is the population in the area so transient?β they say.
βWe have everything! Whole Foods. Multiple ways to play golf inside. Expensive restaurants [aside from the bit I β€οΈ/frequent these]. Rent that keeps getting higher. Boutiques of all flavors! What more could you want? How bout tech darts?!β
I have used my crystal ball to look into the future. And I see so many corporate events. Quarter zips and vests as far as the eye can see. So many lanyards you wouldnβt believe it.
Also thereβs trivia!
Hey I used the buzzword. Whereβs my funding ππ
05.12.2025 18:10 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Not familiar with this. What do you mean?
05.12.2025 18:09 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Love that pettiness drives so much of our public policy!!11!1!11!!
05.12.2025 18:07 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I really think this comes down to finance issues. Local businesses cannot afford the rents in this area. So corps and tech startups with money to burn are the only ones who can come in.
Everything feels so corporate and I just want some culture. The Galley had that. This doesnβt.
I love North Loop. I miss the galley. This is not it. So many better uses for this space.
Why does it feel like this area is just a playground for kitschy tech entertainment? Two indoor mini golf venues. Indoor golf sim. Gentrified darts. All within one mile.
Who is this for?

05.12.2025 17:41 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Can we tell the moderates this is a βPublic Safetyβ issue because the public continues to slip and fall in the winter? Maybe thatβll turn on the money nose if they hear βpublic safetyβ.
05.12.2025 17:38 β π 12 π 3 π¬ 2 π 1Not sure I can be accused of being against technology lol
Skeptical about allowing our city to be a testing ground for driverless cars in the winter. What the motivation of this corp is/how it could affect my neighbors. Uber/Lyft are good + available. And Im proud of the protections they have here.
We agree on what we want to see here. Proof. I need to be convinced on it is all Iβm saying. Feel like thereβs been plenty made for its own safety struggles as well.
