Pointing out the MPD has overspent $20 million of the public dollar is oppression actually.

Aurin Chowdhury rebutting Michael Rainville on his "defund the police" accusation. MPD has done nothing but ramp their budget off the chart. And then overspent that budget by $20 million. "That's the opposite of defunding the police. So let's give it a break."

This coming out the same day as a story about MPD being $20M over budget while the council meeting went over an amendment to reduce the council staff, giving the money to MPD. Is pretty rich.

I have a grand total of zero patience left for the top paid city staff in charge of community safety not being able to answer basic questions about crime trends and personnel allocations as we deliberate our budget.

Conveniently they only figured this out about a month after the election.

I know it’s Commissioner Barnette’s job to stand there and take all the heat for public safety failures that Frey won’t take any accountability for. But it’s embarrassing that he’s this unprepared for basic questions. “Aw shucks idk” routine is lame.

So let’s make sure I got this right.

Frey: gets a raise
MPD: gets a raise
Council Members: less staff for you for you to run council meetings.

If you were an executive looking to consolidate power. This would be one way to do it.

Guarantee this amendment wouldn’t be brought forward if the conservatives had a majority on the council. They want to purposely make the work of governing harder for the progressives.

Sarcastic: need influencers to get back into greasy spoon diners. Start posting about “an affordable counter-service meal is the hot new date spot!”

Real: somethin like an expansion of the Vibrant Storefronts initiative to subsidize rent costs here for diverse business owners. Think grocery/bodega.

I feel like these places have money to burn for about that amount of time and that’s why they keep popping up. Only places with significant backing can get in with the rent environment here rn.

That’s probably the profitability timeline and otherwise it’s a business loss on the taxes!

Like I think we have enough “nightlife entertainment” options. Community seems to feel that way. But every new development seems to be “tech nightlife entertainment built for posting on social media”. Counter intuitive imo!

There’s so much concern from the neighborhood association, and in general, about the bars. Valid concerns about safety/cleanliness of the streets to be fair.

They pushed Rainville for uber/lyft blackout zones on weekends. Dont seem to be enforced tho. Every new business seems to add to the problem!

i love how we keep hearing there are more and more downtown residents than ever and yet all they get is nonsense like this and talk of a billboard district while useful stores like the dollar general close

“We have everything! Whole Foods. Multiple ways to play golf inside. Expensive restaurants [aside from the bit I ❤️/frequent these]. Rent that keeps getting higher. Boutiques of all flavors! What more could you want? How bout tech darts?!”

I have used my crystal ball to look into the future. And I see so many corporate events. Quarter zips and vests as far as the eye can see. So many lanyards you wouldn’t believe it.

I really think this comes down to finance issues. Local businesses cannot afford the rents in this area. So corps and tech startups with money to burn are the only ones who can come in.

Everything feels so corporate and I just want some culture. The Galley had that. This doesn’t.

I love North Loop. I miss the galley. This is not it. So many better uses for this space.

Why does it feel like this area is just a playground for kitschy tech entertainment? Two indoor mini golf venues. Indoor golf sim. Gentrified darts. All within one mile.

Can we tell the moderates this is a “Public Safety” issue because the public continues to slip and fall in the winter? Maybe that’ll turn on the money nose if they hear “public safety”.

Not sure I can be accused of being against technology lol

Skeptical about allowing our city to be a testing ground for driverless cars in the winter. What the motivation of this corp is/how it could affect my neighbors. Uber/Lyft are good + available. And Im proud of the protections they have here.

We agree on what we want to see here. Proof. I need to be convinced on it is all I’m saying. Feel like there’s been plenty made for its own safety struggles as well.
