So far, it looks like all of the macrophages phagocytose (though to varying amounts) but only a subset of those sampled from live cells.
In vitro cultures also indicate that macrophage subsets perform live sampling with different efficiencies.

Yes! So far, I haven't been able to find something that enables us to distinguish between efferocytosis vs. this type of sampling. However, I have done a few in vitro experiments feeding macrophages both live and dead cells (labeled with different colors).
