I know it’s virtually a cliche but so many things like cigarette sales or car crashes (all those people paid to deal with the consequences) boost GDP and so many of the things that make life worth living (unpaid caring, friendship) don’t.

But of course the amount of casework MOs spend their time on must be variable if Geoffrey Cox can take weeks off to be a barrister in a long running fraud trial. Always thought he was either badly serving his client or constituents.

Isabel Hardman write such a good book about this. In essence they spend so much of their time as glorified social workers that they don’t have time to scrutinise legislation that ends up creating even more work for them because its effects weren’t scrutinised when it was passed.

I know it’s saying what the bodies will say but they’re confusing rules on criminal inadmissibility for which there is no exemption for athletes AFAIK with Trump’s ‘travel ban’. And they’re still asking to be exempt from a rule that their government imposes on visitors.

If the conviction wasn’t in the U.K. and the traveller didn’t declare it, ie lied, it probably won’t be discovered. But were the deception to ever be uncovered that could lead to difficulties entering the U.K. in the future.

Now that we’re asking all visitors about criminal history, I suspect some people who have previously visited the U.K. without issue are going to find it harder and this could have sad consequences, eg people unable to go to funerals or say goodbye to dying relatives.

From the country that denies entry to foreigners convicted of minor drug offences. As it happens I think it’s probably a bit OTT to ban somebody from getting an ETA if they served over twelve months no matter how long ago it was. Although as it says he can make ‘an application outside the rules’.
