the way democracy works now is that we keep voting for people to whack us in the nuts with bigger and bigger hammers. occasionally we vote for someone who says they’ll use smaller hammers, but guess what? bigger hammers

Brian Eno 2h. On the Arrest of Young People at a Quaker Meeting House Last night, six young people were arrested by police during a peaceful gathering at a Quaker Meeting House. They had assembled to talk, reflect, and organise around two issues of overwhelming moral gravity: the climate emergency, and the continuing destruction in Gaza. That the police chose to forcibly enter a Quaker space-a site known throughout history for its deep commitment to peace and nonviolenceβ€”is both alarming and telling. These young people were not disrupting the peace. They were enacting it. We live in a time where the greatest threats to our future go unchallenged by those in power, while those who speak out are increasingly met with suspicion, hostility, and force. When the state begins to treat moral concern as criminal intent, we should all be paying close attention. The people arrested last night were not extremists. They were citizens who care-young people who see the interconnected crises of climate collapse and human suffering and refuse to turn away. They gathered not in violent defiance, but in peaceful conscience. I stand with them. I believe their voices are not only valid, but vital. If the institutions meant to protect us cannot bear to hear these voices, then it is not the protesters who are disrupting orderβ€”it is the silence of those who look away. - Brian Eno

Where I live there in the London suburbs there are like 5 golf courses in a few square miles. They are biodiversity deserts. I'd build houses on them with lovely wild spaces for residents and wildlife. Fuck golf and the people who play it

My hopes for the next few years rest entirely on these horrible men having very funny fallings out, being too incompetent to effectively do all the evil and, if we’re really lucky, simply dropping dead

The rise and fall of robots.txt As unscrupulous AI companies crawl for more and more data, the basic social contract of the web is falling apart.

This is super interesting and too long for me to read, but it was fascinating even with speed reading.

Bluesky is officially β€œopen” now (no more invites). So just a reminder to not engage with trolls and bad actors, there is no algorithm here to promote or spread them, replying to them is what puts them on everybody’s timelines. So block and give no oxygen.

Black and white photo of a stunning black woman in 1950s style gown, sitting at a vanity full of jars of make up and cleaners and whatnot. She looks into a hand mirror while leaning forward toward a shorthaired white and tabby cat so that they can both look into the mirror. The cat looks off to the left and seems a little startled.
