This storm has delivered so far! 5-6 inches in Ashland and still snowing as of 4:30 PM. Multiple trees down.

I am more inclined to believe the NBM and GEFS over any deterministic model at this time, but confidence remains low and more details will be ironed out as we get closer.

Ensembles (namely the GEFS/EPS) still have a solid snowfall signal for the lower elevations, but both have low confidence and a wide margin of error.

00z GFS has uptrended massively for the latter part of the week but has nearly no snowfall for the lower elevations over the weekend. 00z Euro has a very similar story with little to no snowfall over the weekend-early week but with notable totals after Wednesday; albeit meager compared to the GFS.

Firstly, NBM has trended further down to almost nothing in the low elevations for the initial storm system (Sat-Tues) but still has solid snowfall toward the end of the week (Wed-Fri).

This move is going to be detrimental to communities that will inevitably be ravaged by worsening climate change. It is so hard to remain optimistic right now.

These statistics highlight the importance of climate research and protective climate change policy; especially since the global temperature has increased above the 1.5*C (and 2*C) thresholds.

Conversely, the occurrence of cold days (high temp < 32*F) in traditionally cold cities such as NYC and Boston will be on the decline, as well. Even lower emission scenarios show a significant decrease in cold days in both cities by 2080. (3/)

As someone in college for climate and public health research, seeing the new administration withdraw policy is disheartening and frustrating. Today, I used NOAA's climate explorer to model several different projections and highlight the importance of climate research and common-sense policy. (1/)

That is a remarkably dry air mass for Peachtree City, GA, with a precipitable water value of 0.05", partially thanks to the extremely cold air mass for the region (15°F sfc temp). Record dry territory per SPC sounding climatology.

After a prolonged dry stretch, deterministic models are finally hinting at a wetter (though any rain would be wetter) and possibly cooler pattern toward the end of January into February. It appears that some rain may grace the SW US as well, though confidence is low at this time. Fingers crossed!

Last night's long-range GFS was one of the most beautiful model runs that I have ever seen. No point in going into detail about the specifics of the model run other than the potential for colder air at the end of the month is remaining and increasing still. This deserved to be put in the Louvre!

Winds are CRANKING here at my house in NW Reno. A nearby weather station reported an 87 mph gust. It sounds like there is some wind damage as I have heard shingles flap and fences creak. Wow! #nvwx
