Had the government said "as a mark of respect, we'd like you to cancel football matches, concerts etc AND protests today", then fair enough. But to single out the protest they've long wanted to stop anyway as the one thing we should not do looks like disgraceful exploitation of a horrific attack.

if, like me, you were hoping for a more eccentric or charismatic choice to shake up the current white, southern, low church leadership dynamic, you might not have what you want.

there are, of course, issues with the appointment. not least that the church does not need ‘more of the same’ leadership, nor does it need more representation from the south of england.

bishop sarah takes on this role at an extremely difficult time. let us pray that she leads prayerfully, serves humbly, preaches the Gospel in word and deed, and shepherds Christ’s Church with integrity and love.

this is really disappointing and irresponsible. the same humanity that guides us to oppose the murder of innocents in the middle east should guide us to oppose the murder of innocents at home, and vice versa. we can’t use this tragedy for political purposes, on any ‘side’.

Our thoughts, prayers and solidarity are with the victims and the whole community at Heaton Park synagogue. This horrific attack coming on Yom Kippur will only compound the pain felt by our Jewish friends and neighbours.
