My idea of heaven is a beautiful library, with beautiful grounds to walk on. Inside it is fully functional with books, audio, video, art & writing workshops, and guest speakers from throughout all time. Its rooms represent all cultures.
It is filled with people who loved learning their whole lives.

Earth Temperature Timeline

I think here in Oz everyone just assumes the Powers That Be will fix it.

The fact we're the 2nd largest exporter of fossil fuels in the world doesn't help our collective guilt.

90% of the Florida reefs have died thanks to climate change in the last 30 years. Entire ecosystems are being wiped out and the ecosystems they're connected to are now dying.

That is cascading ecological collapse. We are facing an ecological apocalypse that will kill us all unless we [redacted]

Humans evolved during and between ice ages.

It only takes a wet bulb temperature of 45 degrees Celsius to kill us.

Adaptation to 3+ degrees of global temperature rise seems unlikely.

Future looks good for reptiles though. Expect crocodilians to become bigger and smarter.

This has to be the MOST cynical attempt to pretend individuals hold equal responsibility for climate change as corporations I've ever seen. I mean, who can say who's worse: tech billionaires draining earth's water and electricity for AI data centers or selfish people trying to breathe?

This would single-handedly transform the lives of everyone I know in such profound ways it is difficult to fully articulate, but it would also let us actually make more and different and crazy things

It fucks me up that most adults can't take art seriously as a medium for storytelling. Like it's considered a normal thing for adults to enjoy going to a museum and hanging a painting in their house but they draw the line at reading a graphic novel because "comics are for kids". That's insane.

Thanks for those, they were fascinating.

I find it funny he regards the move to complex life as being based on stability of conditions whereas I wonder what changed to make that happen?

Finally: AI cannot do your job, but an AI salesman can 100% convince your boss to fire you and replace you with an AI that can't do your job, and when the bubble bursts, the money-hemorrhaging "foundation models" will be shut off and we'll lose the AI that can't do your job, and you will be long gone, retrained or retired or "discouraged" and out of the labor market, and no one will do your job. AI is the asbestos we are shoveling into the walls of our society and our descendants will be digging it out for generations:
