The ecological and evolutionary consequences of systemic racism in urban environments Cities create challenging environments for many nonhuman species, and the presence of nonhumans in cities influences the health and well-being of the humans with which they share the environment. Dist...

In a 2020 #ScienceReview, researchers investigated how systematic racist practices such as residential segregation have led to an unequal distribution of โ€œnatureโ€ within cities.

Shutdown hostage taking Russ Vought's threatens more mass firings; SCOTUS blesses his de facto impoundment

New from me: Russ Vought is using federal employees as hostages in federal shutdown negotiations, threatening mass firings if Dems do not accept Trump's terms.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court just allowed Vought to impose a de facto impoundment of foreign aid.

Libraries are the core infrastructure of universities. Slower, more engagement, more thoughtful, and burns more calories going into the stacks. Except the last part, I think this is the real bedrock of scholarship.

Yes, there are deep confusions about what representation is and is not that only become deeper confusions when it gets to non-representational art.

Fair point. Social media doesnโ€™t cut it for those purposes, but it can make you aware of new people and genuinely interesting perspective, even if itโ€™s the case that they tend to come from โ€˜your side.โ€™ Iโ€™ve frequently encountered writing that articulates things better than I can, and thatโ€™s a plus!

I wonder if we tend to gravitate towards circles of approval because the alternative in social media is less likely to be critique and more likely to be confrontation, which is exhausting and unfruitful.

How did assaults on science become the norm โ€” and what can we do? An insightful book explores attacks on science from a historical and a personal perspective.

A Surprise Tenure Denial in Harvardโ€™s Gender Studies Program Leaves Some Faculty Shaken | News | The Harvard Crimson Durba Mitraโ€™s colleagues thought she was a near-perfect tenure candidate. When her bid was shot down in June, they were left questioning the process.

Holy FS, this brief is filled with convoluted garbage. Itโ€™s more than a little curious that no biologists, cognitive scientists, or anyone from the sciences in general were not consulted, given experience with the complexities of trying to define an actual basis for real world categorization.

Itโ€™s a good essay, and points to, I think a necessary, but not sufficient condition for Dem party success: you still need a coherent political philosophy that takes principled stands on issues.

I may be wrong (itโ€™s a hobby), but ultimately isnโ€™t the Secret of Defense a public servant? Outside of classified document, is there no requirement for public accountability? Iโ€™m not naive, but the idea that this bozo gets to decide what the public is entitled to is outrageous.
