Too many variables before the primary to say. A lot of Dems seem to like him. But it doesn't particularly matter to my point, which is that asking people not to nominate Newsom only really makes sense before he is the nominee, so it is unreasonable to criticize somebody for saying it proactively.

Surely *before* a hopeful becomes the nominee is the right time to explain why you won't support them, so that the party can hopefully make the right choice when it comes time to nominate someone.

This is objectively false. It's liberal cope. 2016 Bernie supporters were more likely to vote for Clinton than 2008 Clinton supporters were to vote for Obama. They correctly predicted that running an uninspiring liberal would make it easier for Trump to win, but they did generally vote Democrat.
