If you have fears about homeless people in your neighborhood, I advise that you go talk to them. Bring a handful of twenties, if you can afford it, hand them out and talk to them like human beings.

You’ll stop feeling as scared and start feeling sad and angry that people have to suffer needlessly.

Many, many, MANY studies show that the cumulative costs of harassing homeless peopleβ€”cops, prison, jail, etcβ€”are much more expensive than just housing them and providing income, and that doing those things helps people get to the point where they’re not in crisis any longer.

We choose cruelty.

"An untested socialist electrified progressives, but is giving mainstream Dems pause."

"The general election isn't a foregone conclusion. And that's good for democracy."

"A fascist asswipe wouldn't be the best fit for NYC in normal times. But these aren't normal times."

It’s only luck this didn’t happen in Seattle. SPD haphazardly blocked off some parade route intersections, leaving others wide open. The massive squadrons of cops mustered to protect bigots and gas queer kids days earlier shrunken to a handful of lackadaisically deployed squad cars.

if Ritchie fucking Torres can do this and Chris Van Hollen can fly to El Salvador the rest of the Dem caucus can show up too

hell, everyone should go on the El Salvador trip

now’s the time, folks, this road ends with you in the foreign prison

Wilmer only found out his son had been detained after receiving a phone call on March 15 from his nephew, Luis, who lives with them. That morning was their last time together; they had gone around the corner to do their laundry. Later that day, Wilmer said that his son met with a friend to get help with some errands at the American Red Cross. He learned this from Luis, who looked at the situation from inside the apartment: when his son was on his way back, just steps from his home when ICE agents stopped him. β€œThe officers grabbed him and two other boys right at the entrance to our building. One said, β€˜No, he’s not the one,’ like they were looking for someone else. But the other said, β€˜Take him anyway.'”

That moment marked the beginning of Wilmer’s search for answers β€” answers he’s still waiting for.

One of hundreds of people abducted by ICE and sold to slavery in El Salvador was a 19 year old with no criminal record in the US or Venezuela and no tattoos of any kind.

An ICE kidnapper who grabbed him outside his house said, "He's not the one."

The other said, "Take him anyway."

So they did.

Bukele’s Offense Against the American People Here’s how I look at today’s White House spectacle. I don’t really...

Any Democratic politician who doesn't understand Nayib Bukele's grave offense against the sovereignty of the American people and constitutional order and say as much publicly should have no future in elected office. talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/bukel...

Pretty sure JB Pritzker is gonna run for president. He’s a good choice for a lot of reasons β€” I say this is a lifelong Illinois resident. One big reason to boost him & this speech: he has not & will not throw the trans community under the bus for alleged political gain (that would never arrive)

1/7 The current president was voted in by vowing to deport drug smugglers, criminals and rapists. Instead, only a few weeks into this term, people are being swept up and detained without legal cause. No notice to their families, no way for lawyers to find them.

I know cruelty is the point but… man this one is just especially ghoulish. They say they’re doing this to β€œprotect the kids” but it’s always been so painfully obvious what the truth is. The want trans kids to die, to disappear, to be erased.

Also, I've worked directly with people in permanent supportive housing - your schizophrenia, for example, doesn't go away when you become supportively housed, but you do get access to care. And you don't have your low points on a sidewalk. You have it safe in your apartment.

What else has happened in the intervening decades that might impact homelessness might be a better question to ask rather than "is housing first causing homelessness?"

We're Told 'Violence Is Never the Answer.' In 2024, It Was the Only Answer We Got. This yearβ€”between the genocide in Gaza, the reelection of a sexual predator, and endless abortion ban horror storiesβ€”we watched prevailing narratives about the sanctity of human life fall apart.

Especially over the last few weeks, our political leaders have have stressed that "violence is never the answer." But every day of 2024, it was the only one they gave us. I wrote a bit about this year @jezebeldotcom.bsky.social:

A man has sent up a tent across the street from my apartment - in entryway of a building that’s about to be knocked down

My neighbours are angry they have to look at him. Meanwhile it’s -11 tonight and it’ll be -20 tomorrow

I’m bedbound & can’t do anything to help…so I sent a warm meal via Uber 🧡

Scoop: Inside the Biden White House's aggressive back-to-office push The White House chief of staff wants to inject more urgency into the effort.

Remote work has made employment more accessible than ever, and increased the number of disabled people with jobs.

Working from home can also cut the carbon footprint of employees in half.

Forcing people back to the office goes against workers' rights, disability justice, and climate justice.

Behind the bitter and boring fights about telling the public to keep voting harder to save democracy, there's the fact that the people we vote for chronically, systematically refuse to use their actual powers to defend the republic
