And then there are the more subtle relationships we are only just beginning to unravel, like potential links between viral infections and neurodegenerative disorders, multiple sclerosis, and others.

Yep, there are so many ways that infections can cause long-term problems: post-viral syndrome; latent viral infections (and reactivation); chronic infections; permanent disability (eg blindness, sterility); permanent damage, like cancer, heart disease; and even allergies.

U Michigan has a very highly rated & decent sized program. A big loss to the epi community for them not to be training new phds.

UMich cancels doctoral epidemiology program admissions for 2026 The University of Michigan School of Public Health will not admit a 2025-2026 admissions cycle cohort to its PhD in Epidemiologic Sciences program.

People thought I was overreacting when I said Trump’s list of “banned” words meant epidemiology was itself defacto being banned.

But this week U Michigan announced they aren’t even accepting applications for the 2026 epi PhD admissions cycle.

Pre-existing conditions make the need for care greater, not lesser. How the fuck did we let this opposite idea take hold?!
