Infections are bad for you should be the absolutely least controversial statement a person can make. And yet.

And then there are the more subtle relationships we are only just beginning to unravel, like potential links between viral infections and neurodegenerative disorders, multiple sclerosis, and others.

Yep, there are so many ways that infections can cause long-term problems: post-viral syndrome; latent viral infections (and reactivation); chronic infections; permanent disability (eg blindness, sterility); permanent damage, like cancer, heart disease; and even allergies.

Kareem Carr standing outside Harvard School of Public Health moments after his successful PhD defense. He is smiling, dressed in a dark-patterned sport coat and dress pants, leaning casually against a railing. There is a bright red sign over his right shoulder that reads โ€œHarvard T.H. Chan School of Public Healthโ€.

U Michigan has a very highly rated & decent sized program. A big loss to the epi community for them not to be training new phds.

UMich cancels doctoral epidemiology program admissions for 2026 The University of Michigan School of Public Health will not admit a 2025-2026 admissions cycle cohort to its PhD in Epidemiologic Sciences program.

People thought I was overreacting when I said Trumpโ€™s list of โ€œbannedโ€ words meant epidemiology was itself defacto being banned.

But this week U Michigan announced they arenโ€™t even accepting applications for the 2026 epi PhD admissions cycle.

How have you been impacted by the changes we've seen under the current administration? What would you want to say to those in charge?

I'm launching a new research initiative to collect and share anonymous stories of the human toll. And I'd be very grateful for your help.

Itโ€™s not just insurance companies anymore. Itโ€™s news media, politicians, talking heads, etc. This idea has escaped into the general public.

The main thing that worries me about this is the near certainty that whoever gets the job next will be even less qualified.
