We should all want good immigration policy. We should all want strong borders in that they are clearly defined & secured. But we don't need expensive security theater or a violent police state and we shouldn't think an immigrant harms our economy or threatens jobs in general. Political extremes suck

But there is support for this economically unhelpful potentially extremely destructive ideas. There's is support for policy that reduces immigration and leaves people to harms out of some horrible idea that they'll "steal a job" or work for less money in worse conditions. That's Bernie's position.

BUT at the end of the day, Trump & the right's protectionism is not that far removed from Bernie's own ideas about protectionism. You can see that in Unions supporting Trump in 2024. The reasons for supporting this are different than Trump - pro-labor, anti-slavery for example, not xenophobia

He also simply denies entry legally to more people in general which is one of the largest sources of people becoming undocumented in the country. He also inflates his own numbers, conflating a turned back visitor with a deported undocumented person.

Bernie is also wrong about saying Trump has been successful at securing the border. Just as with his first administration he simply has forced migrants to suffer evils and much like hanging a thief at the entrance to the city, simply discourages all but profit seeking criminals & the most desperate.

So, let's actually acknowledge that *during* Biden's administration we did have a border crisis, but that existing is caused by multiple factors and several bad actors working against fixing it and Bernie is wrong for laying all the blame at his feet.

I also think it's wild for people to deny that Biden faced an absolutely insane issue at the border due to the build-up from Trump's handling of COVID and court rulings at the start of his administration and the GOP absolutely ensuring the largest progress was stopped to make the crisis continue.

I think it is interesting that Bernie's position has always been strong border protections, as a form of labor rights protections and a race to the bottom as far as working conditions in general.

It's really wild watching people not realize this has been his position for a very long time.
