Similarly, I've always thought that the Electoral College will end when both parties lose it while winning the popular vote within a decade or so of each other, and probably not before.

Referring to her as a β€œparty girl” who β€œlikes older men” is vomit-inducing, but also proves the point in another discussion happening now about how anti-feminist the 90s and early 2000s were.

So disliking the ad and expressing such is bad, but Dems ignoring the ad (as the vast majority have, including anyone with actual power) is also bad? Democratic politicians are supposed to run around discarding any message they have to instead say how great some ad for jeans is, according to Weigel?

When my mother's uncle died, he was a devout Catholic all his life, but had been in too ill health the last year-ish to regularly attend church and the priest at our local church was new and so didn't know him well. The priest still gave a lovely eulogy. I'd imagine that's fairly common.

Very odd to put Ohio & Florida among β€œfair” maps.

Ohio’s map was repeatedly struck down by courts as illegal gerrymander, and GOP just ignored the ruling till it ran out the cock.

Florida’s dismantled a Black-majority district that a court had ordered last decade. www.nytimes.com/2025/08/02/u...

I bought β€œnatural” deodorant once, when I’d forgotten to pack mine while dogsitting and the closest store was a Whole Foods. It was early summer in the DC area. I have not repeated that purchase error since.

Everything else is terrible, but the Le Creuset Factory to Table sale is going to be half an hour away from my apartment in a month and I am DELIGHTED. Going to see if I can get a VIP ticket and get one of those mystery boxes, but even a discounted Dutch oven from the regular sale would be awesome.

Just for the record, Wiatrowski is a longtime BLS employee, a dedicated public servant, someone who has been acting commissioner before, and someone I would have total confidence in during a normal transfer of power. The scary part is who they replace *him* with.

it should go without saying now, but the ADL in 2025 is totally out of step with the values and views of the 70-80% of American Jews who vote for Democrats, support civil rights, racial justice, LGBT rights, etc. etc. etc.

This is the world generative AI peddlers long for, one where people are incompetent without their service.

Don't outsource your brain to this shit. You'll regret it.

Is this where they’re going to store the Epstein files?

A good use of additional White House space would be for extra offices and security - so many important functions get pushed to the Executive Office Building nearby because there’s no room. I’m pretty sure the White House doesn’t need a glorified wedding venue tacked on.

Question for the posting veterans: when did you first find out Heidi Moore was unhinged?

For me, it was when she called out low freelancing rates (good!), then got really mad that an indie lesbian publication's editors objected to being lumped in with Conde Nast and screamed at all of them nonstop.

Being able to afford serving in office is a fixable issue. We can raise pay for legislators to make it easier to serve in public office without personal wealth.

But a hard age limit isn't great for women, who tend to put off running until their kids are older because of caregiving responsibilities.

WWI (also a time of government growth) saw some local public sector union organizing, but it stalled out badly in the 1920s. A lot of people attribute the stall to the 1919 Boston police strike and ensuing violence.

For sure. And it's not a partisan thing at all - the CT and RI state legislatures, both dominated by Dems, have or had until very recently big drinking cultures. There was a bad incident a year or two ago here where a legislator drove drunk and flipped her car while trying to leave the Capitol area.

Before anyone gets mad at me: alcoholism is a disease, one that several people I love are in recovery from, and if that is what's going on with Mullin I hope he gets help. I also hope he stops trying to defend the absolute worst of the Trump admin, but I won't hold my breath on the latter.

This is the clip I was thinking of. I don't know what's up with him in it, but the red face, stumbling over his words, and immediate "oh fuck, shouldn't have said that" expression don't lead to any flattering conclusions. bsky.app/profile/acyn...

I stumbled on this old clip while looking for something else, and given the fairly recent clip where Mullin spoke about giving Trump cover by blocking a resolution to release the Epstein files and appeared (to me at least) to be intoxicated, it seemed relevant. I think he might have a problem.
