Yeah that didn’t happen everywhere and I feel like if you went to a school that invited the police to come fingerprint you, you should get to automatically opt out from all β€œhow did we get here?” discourse

if the management of this place actually wanted to increase the userbase, the best way to attract a lot of progressives would be to take a public anti-conservative stance, & the best way to attract a lot of conservatives would be to take a public anti-conservative stance

there’s quite literally no purpose in continuing to pay taxes if they’re going to weaponize them against a majority of people paying them like this

It's extremely funny to be like "actually when a bunch of white people show up and kill your family and take your land that's less bad then when they enslave you and transport you across an ocean"

So much My Black Friend energy radiating from this monster, but it's "My Palestinian Person I Had A Conversation With" because can't even bring themself to lie about having a Palestinian friend.

"30% of Israelis are not Jews & have equal rights" is such a carefully constructed way of avoiding the reality, in terms of how many Palestinians were explicitly disenfranchised from citizenship, explicitly to make sure of a Jewish majority among Israelis, precisely to deny them equal rights.

Head of the U.S. Military’s Southern Command Is Stepping Down, Officials Say

It's important for prominent Democrats, especially those running for president, to loudly promise they'll throw the full weight of the DOJ into prosecuting illegal acts committed by Trump officials during his administration. If people fear a prison cell, they're more likely to abandon the GOP.

If they have a majority in the house and not the senate they can simply not pass funding for ice.

Thats a thing they can do. They don't have to fund ice, that's a choice they are going to make, not a requirement.

real talk, not looking to score points here:

i feel like the common historical strategy here is a combination of voting + rioting. the role that voting plays is that you get to say "we have a popular mandate, this is the people's rising, &c. &c." and that gets way more people to the uprising

Roberts's memos from this period indicate that he took the assignment very seriously. Violations of Section 2, he wrote, should not be "too easy to prove, since they provide a basis for the most intrusive interference imaginable by federal courts into state and local processes." In another memo, Roberts argued that creating an "effects test" within the Voting Rights Act was unnecessary, because there was "no evidence of voting abuses nationwide supporting the need for such change." He urged Smith, his boss, to take an "aggressive stance" against the proposed amendment, and to not be "fooled" by its supporters.
Colleagues recalled Roberts getting frustrated with what he perceived as the administration's reluctance to more vociferously attack the proposal, and described him as a "zealot" who harbored
"fundamental suspicions" about the Voting Rights
Act's utility, as Berman recounts in his 2015 book, Give Us the Ballot.

Do you understand how reactionary you had to be for lawyers in the *Reagan Justice Department* to remember you as a β€œzealot” for making it harder for Black people to vote ballsandstrikes.org/scotus/john-...

Killing the Voting Rights Act Is John Roberts’s Life’s Work As a 26-year-old Reagan staffer, Roberts was already convinced the Voting Rights Act had to go. He can’t wait to finish the job.

It is impossible to understand the Supreme Court’s Voting Rights Act cases without the context that John Roberts has hated the Voting Rights Act since he was working to water it down as a 26-year-old Reagan staffer. This is his life’s work, and he can’t wait to finish the job.

like 5% of rich people think we should improve society somewhat, while at least 50% spend all their time thinking about the glory of ethnostates, and how it should be illegal to refer to a high-net-worth individual as "a rapist"

"Right of [Israel because it's always used for Israel and no other state] to exist" is just what you say when you don't want to identify the actual change you object to (equal rights for occupied palestinians.)

If Chile conquers Argentina does that mean that Argentina no longer exists? probably! But does it mean the OLD state of Chile no longer exists because of the border change? Well damn, that's silly, but if they are democratic they can expect lots of different laws and polity, so maybe!

17.10.2025 13:24 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

around to replacing the Pinochet constitution will the State of Chile have ceased to exist, and be replaced by the State of Chile, a different state?

Maybe, but if so, sure seems like states existing doesn't really matter!

17.10.2025 13:23 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah I think the questions are all super bullshit just because they don't actually clarify what a state existing even means.

They want to imply "if you say no you are calling for the death of all the people currently in the state" but like, what does "the state of Chile" mean?

If Chile ever gets

Also worth noting that the widespread condemnation of the Riyadh comedy festival demonstrates that there is in fact a consistent ethics of human rights on "the left" in this respect

JF: Do they believe it about OTHER states?

Me: Jill I asked 100 Senators if the Democratic People's Republic of Korea has a right to exist and all 100 of them said no. What the fuck are you talking about. No one thinks states have a right to exist if they don't like the state!

I mean, the US invaded and occupied Afghanistan for twenty years. Afghanistan's right to exist is hardly a third rail of American politics I would argue!

Yeah it's so depressing to have conversations that feel like someone is learning and then they just revert to "actually white people are the protagonists of reality and one random Israeli matters more to me then a thousand papestinians.

No one is asking for vaguery.

You have to say what you are actually doing.

"I'm generating porn to jack off to"

"I'm firing half my programmers and telling the rest to code twice as fast by generating all the code from llms."

Josh Barro: Mamdani won for the same reason he’s winning the campaign: He’s the only candidate with a coherent vision that addresses New Yorkers’ concerns about affordability, and who actually seems to want to be mayor. This campaign has been painful for me as a political centrist because Cuomo, the purported standard-bearer of the political center, has no vision and is the architect of many of the state-level policies that have led to the disorder in the city he now decries. (And he also has personal behavior problems.) Sometimes your side deserves to lose an election; this feels like one of those times. As for Sliwa, Trump’s dig at him as β€œnot exactly prime time” is unfortunately apt.

thinking about the liberal politicians willing to try to compromise with fascists by abandoning minority groups they don't really like - i wish they understood that fascists will come for everyone eventually. even themselves. fascism unopposed is a ruined state with everyone dead
