I’m not surprised that Christianity in America has left such a bad taste in the mouths of so many. There’s a lot of priestcraft around. 5/9

Priestcraft deceives people in different ways. They might think, “Gee, So-and-so is drawing on something I trust, so they must be trustworthy.” Or they might think (correctly), “Yuck, that’s really hypocritical and corrupt”—but then end up rejecting the whole gospel as a result. 4/9

So much so, in fact, that the prophet Alma remarked, “Were priestcraft to be enforced among this people it would prove their entire destruction” (Alma 1:12). 3/9

In other words, priestcraft is the abuse of spiritual authority, or the twisting of gospel teachings for selfish ends (money, power, fame). It’s a pernicious evil. 2/9

The Book of Mormon teaches that when people “set themselves up for a light unto the world, that they may get gain and praise of the world” (2 Nephi 26:29), it’s called priestcraft. 1/9
