When people celebrate the individual genius of folks in science, they should also
mourn the collective loss of genius of folks who were actively discouraged or disadvantaged from a career in science because of the same person(s)

Rosalind Franklin and the damage of gender harassment Spurred by a recent report on sexual harassment in academia, our columnist revisits a historical case and reflects on what has changedโ€”and what hasnโ€™t

Thinking only of Rosalind Franklin today, and what was stolen from her (and so many other female scientists alongside her).

Rosalind Franklin died at 37 of ovarian cancer attributed to radiation exposure from the methods she & her assistant used to photograph a cross-section of the DNA double helix.

Meanwhile, Watson won a Nobel off that work & survived to the ripe old age of 97 by simply: stealing those notes!

"A.i." is racist because its inputs are racist and this use of it will also be racist. Inexcusable. Ban this wicked product from your life as much as you possibly can.

Iโ€™m getting flashbacks to being told I was too direct and definite in my work, when my job was to inform people about the regulations for their funding, and I will only really make definite statements when I am fully certain theyโ€™re correct.

"Did Liberal Feminism Ruin the Workplace?" Yes, actually. Irredeemably ruined. You should leave it immediately. Your wife should earn all the wages and give you an "allowance." Also, only her name should be on the bank account. Since you're home anyway, you can do the easy stuff like housework...

Er zijn natuurlijk eindeloos veel mannen die eindeloos vaak op de ene baan solliciteerden terwijl ze de andere al hadden. Dan heet het ambitie. Zo gewoon dat het nooit het nieuws of de openbaarheid haalt

Excellent thread, highlighting some of my complaints with a 'numerical diversity' approach to DEI work.

Counting the number of people from a minoritised background (e.g. in TV adverts, company boards, universities) is a flawed method that creates opportunities for the misuse of diversity data ๐Ÿ”ข

Born in Berlin in 1932, Weiss came from an intellectual but unsettled family. His father, a Jewish communist doctor, and his mother, a Christian actress, fled Nazi Germany when Rai was still a child. The family escaped first to Prague and later to New York City, arriving in 1939. Weiss studied physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge but struggled, failing out in his junior year. He was rescued by nuclear physicist Jerrold Zacharias at MIT, who took him on as a laboratory technician and later a PhD student. Weiss never forgot the kindness and spent much of his career mentoring students in the same spirit.

Gonna restart my old Twitter thread about great immigrant and refugee scientists. Extra bonus in this one for those us who flunked a wee bit of physics here and there back in the day ๐Ÿ˜œ Rainer Weiss won the Nobel in 2017

Women are credited lessย in science than men - Nature The difference between the number of men and women listed as authors on scientific papers and inventors on patents is at least partly attributable to unacknowledged contributions by women scientists.

Anyone interested in learning about why journals make a proactive effort to increase women's participation in the peer review process should take the time look at some actual evidence about why this is needed. Ditto journalists covering such a story. Do some reporting! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

At Science, we had to increase reviewer diversity. I thought it would be easy, but it was hard b/c my own networks were not diverse. But I didn't realize that till I had to find people and saw I only knew old white guys. I remember looking at my bookshelf and noticing what I had been blind to before

Iโ€™ve discussed this regularly with professors in our house. Three female profs in the department, one mostly works off-site. The other two get SWAMPED with PhD opposition committees, because it looks bad to have only men. Iโ€™m arguing for a limit on often you can oppose in a year.

Happy to see Python take a principled stand here - but keep in mind that not all organizations and researchers are in a position where they can afford to turn down a grant like that. Regardless of your position on EDI specifically - this is unacceptable censorship.
