What torments me is that they may be right: their way may be how we were for a hundred thousand years, how we'll be again for another hundred thousand. But I hold tight to the conviction that they're also wrong, that gentility and compassion make more beauty than anything they'll ever create

There are guys out there who believe the opposite: they figure if human nature is brutal, we need to emphasize the characteristics that would thrive in brutality, that would come out on top in the dominance of the strong over the weak. You know the guys.

The main thing is that a belief that civilization (or democracy, or equality, or whatever) is fragile and precious makes it MORE important to do the work of sustaining it, to teach each new generation the urgency of sustaining it

I don’t want to overstate this, but sometimes I think this civilized state we’ve been in for several hundred (maybe even several thousand) years is a brief flash in the overall arc of human history, at risk of blinking out and returning to the more natural order of inequality and brutality :)
